Would be funny keep HGV's in lane 1, So that lanes full of them how do you plan to get onto and get off the motorway?

Nose to tail lorries for mile after mile, Yes the M42 burton/ashby is a brilliant idea, How many bits of cars have you spotted at that junction since that came into force?

I see it several times a week, MUST OVERTAKE THE LORRY, MUST OVERTAKE. oh dear there is a car in front of the lorry how do i move over now?

The answer sometimes involves bent & twisted bits. I have seen complete bumpers at the side of the sliproad twice now and, Bits of plastic & broken glass on numerous occasions.

What a brilliant idea, That comes into force im buying a HGV for shopping trips.

if everyone used all 3 lanes as their meant to be used congestion would be eased considerably its car/van drivers that need education

I think you'll find the effective mass is considerably more when an object is moving.

Going down the M25 last week I came across just this, all 3 were travelling at the same speed(bar a smidgeon)It was about 5 miles before one struggled to overtake the rest then there was a race to clear the tailback. (yes I do know 3 hgv's are not supposed to do this but you tell the driver)
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

There speaks a poster who has NEVER EVER been down the A1, M1, M6, M25 or M62 between midnight to 5am. On a Monday morning at 4am in South Yorkshire, there's a long line of lorries heading north as far as the eye can see. Thousands of the things.
GOOD ! :T . Believe it or not being a shift worker , i often travel at unsociable hours

When I was a lorry driver, I either started at 4am or finished at 4am. By 8am in the morning, I'd already done 200 miles and was at my delivery.

They already DO work 24hrs a day. The big 6 supermarkets have deliveries 24hrs a day. The Regional Distribution Centers get deliveries 24hrs a day. Where are you going to get the staff to unload them at your local builders merchant? Are you going to pay the massive increases in prices to cover the additional staffing costs of the shop you buy your goods at?
where to get the staff ? try the 2.5 million dole queue . it would be for each individual company to decide , but the one that insist on having a daytime delivery would have to bear the extra cost

As a resident, are you going to be happy with lorries trundling past your house at 2am in the morning? Not many people are which is why many industrial estates have delivery restrictions between 7pm-7am.
People will always moan . they moan about trains running in the hours of darkness. you buy a house next to a industrial estate you know what to expect IMO

most distrubtion depots are on main roads , you buy a house on a main road you know what to expect . it does not stop people who buy a house next to Airport moaning though does it ? some people will always moan ( looking at the baby boomer generation in particular )

To a simpleton who has absolutely no idea of the supply chain, its an obvious solution.

I worked on unloading / loading depot for 8 years , dealing with lorry drivers and companies from as far away as the old eastern block . i think i know more about the supply chain than you

Indeed. Maybe CAR DRIVERS should all stop trying to be on the road in the same two hours at each end of the day.
Maybe they should . i thank god i do not have to travel in rush hour . BUT the end of the supply chain you mentioned works a day shift ( e.g nurse's or the service sector ) . Some people and their jobs cannot be done at other times , unlike HGV driving .

It is really really simple. Lorries are only there because they're carrying things which YOU buy. If you don't want lorries on the road, stop buying stuff. They're also running 24hrs because YOU expect the shelves in the shops to carry all the stock, all of the time.
really i thought they just run up and down the motorway for fun . :rotfl: But if lorry drivers insist and causing misery to many just to get past a marginal slower HGV , then expect people to want something done about it .
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:

Is that not poor observation on your part? if i see a truck in close proximity to a another vehicle, I anticipate a lane change and therefore do not have to brake hard, maybe you should think ahead as to what other actions other road users may use when driving in front of you :)

Trucks can go for miles in "close proximity" to another vehicle. So you adjust accordingly and hold up the 1st overtaking lane INCASE the driver wants to overtake. ITS YOUR FAULT.:)
The other argument about lorries nose to tail in lane one so nobody can enter or leave the mororway is rubbish as well. Would they not leave a safe gap between them and the lorry in front? Is this gap larger than most cars?
I'm confident I could join and exit a motorway if they were keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front of them. Those that cant will avoid motorways altogether so it's win win.

You lot are just lucky you have 3 lanes on a motorway. We tend to get stuck with only 2 lanes*. (M8, M80, M74, M9)

For me, the question is why you are "ambling along" in an overtaking lane.

Coming out the M8, EVERYONE sits in the overtaking lane till Newhouse, even when the inside lanes clear.

Well in this discussion we can see it's a minefield. Trade off the congestion with additional costs if we restrict HGVs etc.

One thing I can't stand on motorways are Middle Lane Hogs. I would rather the Police tackle this menace first over someone driving 90mph on an empty motorway in a well maintained car.

I would give cash bonuses to traffic officers and even those Highways Agency Traffic Officers to stop and fine Middle Lane Hogs. £60 fine & 3 points for the first offence, £600 fine & 6 points for the second middle lane offence, and £6000 fine & 9 points for the third offence. :D
