Its the third lane that comes to a standstill first because there are ten times the number of cars using the 3rd lane because two lorries have spent the last fifteen minutes driving side by side up a hill, and all the cars have to funnel into one lane.

And if you do go on strike for a month, dont be surprised if theres someone else doing your job when you decide to return and nothing left for you......thats the way of the world these days.

Idea - lets try limiting lorries to the inside lane for one month, and see if it has the desired effect, and what any undesirable impacts are......everyone agree?

Look at a traffic jam on a motorway, which lane usually comes to a standstill first? Yes the 3rd lane

Which is what sparked this thread off in the first place. It's the HGV's that just drift into lane 2 then indicate that causes all the other vehicles to bunch into lane 3 - causing lanbe 3 to slow right down.

And if you read my postings you will see that I (the OP) agree that we'd have no food etc in the shops if it wasn't for the HGV's delivering it.

I just think it'd be a good idea to limit HGV's to lane one on motorways, allow them in lane two from 300 yards before the slip road joins, to alow others motorist join safely. Lane 2 could be painted green for this small stretch at slip roads to indicate this.

Nooooooooo. Thats what causes all the delays for no reason on motorways at junctions. Take M25 clockwise by Heathrow......always jams, never accidents, always caused by traffic joining the inside lane, inside lane moving into lane 2, lane 2 moving into lane 3, lane 3 slamming on the brakes etc etc.

And Im not blaming HGV here....its all traffic.

Lane discipline is the way to go......dont change lane unless you really have to.

Why all this antagonism? Surely virtually all lorry drivers are car drivers too? They must know how frustrating it is to sit in a car behind one lorry overtaking another one on a dual carriageway at +0.5 mph, but you can't expect all lorries to have to travel at the speed of the slowest - that would be ridiculous.

Off topic, but are our lorries underpowered? I ask because when I lived in the US I noticed how their huge trucks, even when loaded, seemed to zip up hills much faster than ours can.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

You can't ban lorries from using lane 2,, it's daft and would be ineffective. Imagine the poor bloke who gets on at Bristol on his way to Blackpool, it would take him a month to get there...:rotfl:

Middle lane hoggers are the ones to target -
and people who don't move over to lane one till seconds before their exit so have a mad scramble to get across from lane 3 just like what happens at J8 M6 for the M5.

If you think of all the drivers, I don't mean lorry drivers I mean everyone who:
    Has bad eyesight
    Is on drugs/drunk
    Is too old/young/inexperienced
Is foreign and can't read the roadsigns.....

What a load of tosh. No I don't drive a lorry, well I have done in the past but not now. I have done a lot of motorway driving though, and everyone and his half witted brother seems to think that if you are in the outside lane you MUST be going faster, despite the fact that lanes 1 and 2 are virtually empty and are running a lot more freely.

Why don't car drivers learn to give themselves some space? don't tailgate the car in front, don't swap lanes every 50 yards and appreciate that the artic next to you cant stop as quickly, so dont blame him if you decide at the very last minute to take the exit slip, only to find yourself being shunted down the motorway, or just being crushed.

Read the road ahead instead of gabbing away on your mobile, fixing your hair/make-up, trying to reach that cd thats fallen on the floor in the passenger footwell or anything else that isnt driving. If we all concentrated on our driving and reading the road ahead there would be far fewer accidents and a lot less congestion.

Restrict lorries to inside lane only? Good grief...

No more ridiculous than expecting a hundred or so cars to travel at the speed of two lorries side by side chugging up a hill, or expecting a hundred cars all to move over into lane 3.
