depends on how many lanes are on the motorway. HGV's can run in any lane except the outer lane - so if theres 4 lanes, they can use 3.0 -
And don’t get me started on cars entering a motorway
I've actually lost count of the number of times a lorry driver has eased off a bit to let me onto the M5 of a morning (and I always make sure I thank them). I've also lost count of the number of car drivers who give absolutely no consideration to people trying to merge from a slip road.
Also the end of my road turns onto a bigger, extremely busy road. It's not unheard of to sit for ten minutes trying to get out. And when someone does let you out, maybe seven times out of ten it's a lorry driver.
I'm a horrid impatient driver, but I have absolutely no problem with a lorry overtaking another lorry rather slowly and holding up the traffic for a few minutes, because I can imagine what it's like to need to keep your momentum (anyone who needs a lesson in the importance of momentum should try driving a severely underpowered car up Birdlip Hill on the A417, especially if someone pulls out in front of you and slows you down). I also know how tired and stressed I get just from driving 80 miles a day, so hats off to these blokes who spend half their lives driving.
As far as cars go though, whoever said that middle and outside lane hoggers should have their cars crushed was spot on0 -
Tell you what people, when you are paying £600+ a year road tax, then you can have a say :beer:0

More recently my 42t artic was i think £490 last year and a large car eg Subaru Legacy 3,0 litre registered after March 06 is £450.0 -
Tell you what, pay £6,000 a year to go towards building an extra crawler lane on every motoway and you get to overtake. Until then, stop clagging up the motorways.illegitimi non carborundum0

if you did not have them ,you would have great big lorrrys run through town and villages ,slowing you down even more and the thing you buy will cost more ,
never mind the damage they would do to the roads or the deaths that would happen ,
poeple that do not drive these HGV have no idea about them ,they just see them has a menace on the roads ,
one day you might see the need and the skill thats need to drive one of these round the country and why we us motorways ,
its the safest way to move stuff around ,yes there is some bad LGV drivers around put most unlike other drivers ,we are some off the best in the world ,
you need to have a good look at what we do and have a go ,if you can ,
most of the driver oyu see in LGV have 15/20+ years driving under there belt in the lorrys and you come up with stuff like this ,
the british public shound be ashamed of them selfs ,we used to be the nights off the road, now we are the scum off the roads ,it the british public thats done that ,
and yes i am a full time LGV driver with over 15+ years under my beltthere or their, one day i might us the right one ,until then tuff0 -

+1 - spent most of last summer working around Birmingham and joining the M6 in the morning was a nightmare but as you say more often than not it would be a lorry driver that would help make space for me.0 -
I am an hgv driver and have driven all over Europe and beyond and this stupid idea of sticking all lorries in lane one only doesn't work. If you have ever driven up the a1 through Germany you will see hundreds of lorries nose to tail crawling along at 20-30 kph because of the concertina(spelling) effect. The front lorry is doing 80kph which is the legal limit in Germany, the chap behind is doing 79 to keep a safe distance etc etc.
It causes chaos at junctions, but unlike most British drivers Europeans actually know that the White lines on the road mean give way not I have a right to pull on and make the following driver take evasive action.
There were early comments saying "oh if you keep a safe distance there is room for me to pull out" well numpties that's what it is, a SAFE distance not your personal pull in place when you want to wait until 30 yards before you pull off the motorway. What happens when you pull into this space? I will tell you what happens, you pull in and cut my SAFE braking distance in half which would make it impossible for me to stop. Now this isn't a problem unless as you pull in the traffic in front of you comes to a sudden standstill (how many times have we seen this) when this happens the only outcome will be you getting squished. Ever seen a car that has been squashed like this? I have and I can just about promise you will be dead. And for what? To gain an extra 50 yards because oc your stupid selfish attitude of "oh I can't possibly pull into the 3 miles of empty lane BEHIND that big smelly truck"
I worked for lidls for a while delivering to their stores, but most of them have 7am restrictions on them so even though I worked through the night I still couldn't deliver to the last two stores until after 7am. And the ones I did deliver to during the night I felt terrible because I am pulling up in a residential area at 2-3am and spending an hour with the fridge on the truck running and banging pallets off the back.
I agree that as much driving should be done at night and it already is, while most of the anti truck brigade are still at home dreaming of their next rep mobile, were already out making sure you have your coffee and donuts in the shops for your morning breaks.
This is to the chap who thinks it should all go by rail. You sir are a class one prat. How do you suggest everything gets from the rail terminals to the shops?or do you think all shops should move to the rail terminal. They had this in Bristol when they reopened the rail link from the docks so they could take the car transporters off the road. Now think about it what would you rather have? A single vehicle with a single mind going at a set speed with 10 motor cars on at a length of roughly 60 feet OR 10 cars with 10 seperate brains taking up let's say 12 feet each PLUS the safe distance between them. It's a no brainer a single vehicle taking 60 feet plus safe distance or 10 vehicles taking 120 feet plus safe distance.
You all know what happend when there were no trucks on the roads for a week. Personally I would love for all the truck drivers to go out and stock up on petrol and food and then go on strike for a MONTH. Maybe then when you can't get to work in your rep mobile because you have no petrol and you and your kids are starving because there us no food on the shelved, maybe then you lorry haters might start to show us some of the respect we deserve. Until then you will live in your little bubbles and blame the lorry everytime when in actual fact the majority of the time traffic hold ups are caused by cars.
Look at a traffic jam on a motorway, which lane usually comes to a standstill first? Yes the 3rd lane then the 2nd and it's only then these middle lane morons pull into the inside lane causing that one to slow down. If all you perfect lorry hating drivers were actuall paying attention to speed conditions and distance maybe you wouldn't have to slam your brakes on causing all the vehicles behind you to brake, this is fact alot of the congestion is caused by this so why don't you try keeping a safe distance!!!!!!
Right I'm off now to run down some old ladies murder some prostitutes chat on my phone and brew up.0
