And if you read my postings you will see that I (the OP) agree that we'd have no food etc in the shops if it wasn't for the HGV's delivering it.
I just think it'd be a good idea to limit HGV's to lane one on motorways, allow them in lane two from 300 yards before the slip road joins, to alow others motorist join safely. Lane 2 could be painted green for this small stretch at slip roads to indicate this.
God Harvey you have never been so wrong:mad::mad::mad::mad:
I am no HGV driver.
I am Mr average. If a lorry cuts me up, I give him the finger, if he lets me out I thank him, !!!!!! he's just me or you in a bigger and slower vehicle????
You really have no idea of what roads and particularly motorway are for.
I'll give you a clue, not for your personnal express transport, (shakes head in disbelief at this type of attitude).
Listen to the few HGV guts that are posting here, they are not extreme views, but just demonstrate that we need to keep the roads moving.
Crap post HARVEY.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

Off topic, but are our lorries underpowered? I ask because when I lived in the US I noticed how their huge trucks, even when loaded, seemed to zip up hills much faster than ours can.
No. we have some of the most powerful built trucks in the world in Europe. MAN and Volvo have 700bhp trucks, but they are still limited to 56mph (90kph) on the roads of Europe. However it will be pretty rare to see one of these struggle up a hill fully loaded. The avaerage rating at the moment is 420/440bhp, and that equates to 10bhp per tonne.
The reason you'll see Yank trucks going up hills seemingly quicker, is because they have no limiters on theirs, therefore allowing them to take a run at a hill, and also their gross weight limit is less than ours. That's my mutt in the picture above.0 -

The way to keep the roads moving is to limit HGVs to the inside lane. If theyre all doing 56mph, theres no need for them to be overtaking. If theres a hill, theyre all going to slow down a bit.illegitimi non carborundum0 -

I have no real aversion to lorries, nor their drivers.
Im just fed up of crawling round motorways because Stobby and Nobby want to see whether Stobbys 56mph is faster than Nobbys 56mph, and taking five miles side by side to find out.illegitimi non carborundum0 -

Sure rev, but driving at 50 instead of 56 isnt going to have a huge impact on what time they arrive.
And anway, if they know their friends cant go into lane 2, they wont be anti-social and they will all travel at 56.illegitimi non carborundum0 -
I keep going to post, but theres so much rubbish been said now, it's nearly not worth the effort.
To multiquote every stupid statement and try to make a sane respones would take a lifetime.
But heres 2 recent ones. To the HGV driver that drives at 1kmPH less to keep a safe gap between him and the vehicle in front, this would cause the gap to increase, not stay the same.
You also discount the safe distance theory of entering and exiting. If i'm going to join a motorway between 2 lorries, I've assessed both your speed and the vehicle in front and assessed where I'm going next. I'm going to lane 2 to pass the guy in front of you too, perhaps lane 3 to get past mr micra in 2 whos been there an eternity. I've already assessed the chance of traffic coming to a standstill trapping me between the two of you and decided it's negligable. And all in the blink of an eye.
And Stobby and Nobby. If theyre, side by side, one must have been going faster than the other to get into that position. When that situation repeats he'll get past although I would say the one in the inside lane should lift off for a split second to assist his HGV driving bretheren.
If EVERYONE used good lane dicipline and shows some consideration it wouldnt be a problem.0 -
As someone has already said though, it really all depends on the tread depth left on the tyre. With around an inch (if not more) of tread on a new tyre, when it starts to wear low, your gonna be able to go faster....
From a personal point of view though, Im not really fussed about trucks using the 2nd lane. Im more than happy to sit at 70mph and if one pulls out in front of me, Ill slow down until he passes and pulls back in, at which point (if I havent already had the opportunity to overtake) Ill build back up to 70. Although that's only recently mind, I used to be a bit of a speed freak and treat my accelerator as more of an on/off switch!
Since buying a Volvo C70 though, Ive mellowed and found there's a lot to say for Radio 4 and LBC. Trouble is, Im only 28!!!:D0
