Noone is against HGVs, or the importance of their journey, however its preferable for most people to have HGV journeys take five minutes or so longer, in return for more free-running motorways.

Sorry, but you do not have a grasp of the situation,

1 min locked in lane 1, 1 min to get back up to 56, 10 mins at 45, etc etc etc, give these guys a break, there is a 3rd lane for other motorists and morons, take your choice.

You seem to be missing 1 important factor... the laws regulating HGV driver hours!

If all trucks were to only use the inside lane they would only be as fast as the slowest... say 50mph which is the norm for Tesco.

My truck is limited to 55mph so I've just lost 5mph which equates to an increase of roughly 7 seconds per mile.

Ok, not much you might think but then multiply these 7 secs by 250 miles & it ends up at around 25mins extra.

All HGV drivers are strictly regulated when it comes to driving time, work time, break periods & this extra 25mins (50mins for a round trip) can & would make the difference to me making it to my delivery on time or, more importantly, me getting home.

Failing to do either will cost my company!

Now you might say that if this became law all Hauliers would revise their route planning to take into account the extra time needed to get from A to B & of course you'd be right... but it would cost!

Whether it was extra man power or extra trucks to do the job, it would cost & that cost would ultimately be passed on!

We would all end up paying more for our goods to save car drivers having to lift their foot off the gas pedal... fine if that's what you want but as I have to buy the same stuff as you I can say I wouldn't be too chuffed.

No, I have purposely avoided driving jobs that involved "nights out"... the lifestyle I chose was to be home every night & as things are I manage to do just that.

If car drivers would keep distance, indicate, use lane dicipline, plan ahead (really the basics of driving) then the motorway network would be very free flowing indeed.

And if HGVs did the same..;)

:D Quite the opposite I think, no middle ground here, all black or white, and not a word of agreement to be seen :D

Undoubtedly it would require some kind of formal agreement between government, business and drivers to agree limiter speeds, but if everyone was limited to say 55mph, and everyone agreed to maintain this speed wherever possible/safe etc, there would be no need for HGVs to stray out of lane 1.

I think this is the theory behind 50 zones through motorway road works. No one does less than 50 on a motorway, and there's a 50 limit, so everyone does exactly 50 and the traffic flows better; HGVs and cars go at the same speed etc.
    That's the theory anyway.

Hmmmmmmmm but surely middle land road rage is caused by the old dears who insist on travelling in the middle lane when driving slowly. That is WHY peeps keep changing lane in order to get past them.

What a load of tosh. No I don't drive a lorry, well I have done in the past but not now. I have done a lot of motorway driving though, and everyone and his half witted brother seems to think that if you are in the outside lane you MUST be going faster, despite the fact that lanes 1 and 2 are virtually empty and are running a lot more freely.

Why don't car drivers learn to give themselves some space? don't tailgate the car in front, don't swap lanes every 50 yards and appreciate that the artic next to you cant stop as quickly, so dont blame him if you decide at the very last minute to take the exit slip, only to find yourself being shunted down the motorway, or just being crushed.

Read the road ahead instead of gabbing away on your mobile, fixing your hair/make-up, trying to reach that cd thats fallen on the floor in the passenger footwell or anything else that isnt driving. If we all concentrated on our driving and reading the road ahead there would be far fewer accidents and a lot less congestion.

Restrict lorries to inside lane only? Good grief...
