Car insurance for 17 year old

As the title suggests, I need to set up car insurance for my 17 year old son and me.
Any Insurance companies Recommendations for young, new drives? Also, I note that the cost does reduce if I, rather than my son, am noted as the "Main Driver". Does anyone know what is the definition of a "Named Driver"?

If you put yourself as the main driver and you are not then this is called fronting and is illegal. The insurance will become invalid.
I used Directline until last year. Now with Admiral.0 -
Use the 'search' facility. This is a regular question on this Board. Also I'd investigate the word 'fronting' in relation to car insurance The main driver is the driver that does the most mileage. The named driver does less mileage.0

Does he have a full licence yet?
If not, ignore the fronting comments.0 -
On the not a full licence bit, DirectLine didn't charge me when I changed from provisional to full and also sent me a refund for doing PassPlus. I think it ended up being the same amount, so I basically got the PassPlus for free.
This was 4 years ago though!0 -

Yeah my insurer at the time (Aviva) didn't charge me either - but if he's on a provisional then he can't possibly be the main driver of the car and fronting wouldn't be a concern.
TBH I had an accident as a fully licensed named driver and fronting was never raised..... (I wasn't, but that's not the point)0 -

Thanks for all replies.
Provisional licence at this stage.
People had mentioned to me that putting a parent as a main driver reduced the cost, but I was concerned that it could void the policy. It does seem pointless going down the fronting route if it voids the policy upon a claim. The purpose of insurance is "just in case" so why take the risk.
gordikin - Thanks, confirmed my suspicions
tripled - thanks for the link, helpful.
Passplus seems worth while
Another query - can one build up full comp no claims discount by initially taking out third party fire & theft?Notlob0 -
Why not??but if he's on a provisional then he can't possibly be the main driver of the car and fronting wouldn't be a concern.
Why can't a learner be a main driver??
A learner can quite easily be main driver and in fact could quite feasibly be the ONLY driver. They'd never be able to drive without a license holder with them but they'd still be the main or only driver.I had an accident as a fully licensed named driver and fronting was never raised..... (I wasn't, but that's not the point)
Named driver is different from a being a main driver and using that as fronting - that's why fronting was never raised.
Named drivers could quite easily use the car an equal amount and both be covered by the same policy - their wouldn't be a "main" driver.
