My son is 17 and starting driving lessons, but i'm just wondering if anyone here is 17 or has kids that age and has any idea what car insurance costs in this age group. I will be looking to get him a cheap small engined secondhand car - can anyone tell me roughly what their (or their kids) insurance cost and what type of car they drive? My son heard 6th form rumours of over £1K a year on insurance? Can that be right??

Unfortunately you should prepare yourself for "Well Over" £1000 and more likely £2000
Why not try getting some quotes on a few different cars so you have an idea0 -

If anything, those rumours are understated.
General rule of thumb is that, for a 17 year old, anything sub £1,600 is "bite their hand off" territory.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

Hi. I'm 18 now, passed and got my car when i was 17. I'm not sure how i achieved £1700 on a 2003 car, but that was the cheapest quote I got, it didn't really seem to matter if it was a 1L 20 year old car or not, infact, some of them were more expensive :S Don't as me why, ask i have no idea.
£1700 was by far the cheapest, even cheaper than the insurers that claimed they were just for new drivers.
Mix it up a bit though. Try adding yourself on the policy as the named driver if your son is the main driver. Providing you have a clean license, then it should bring the price down. Is it just going to be your son driving the car?
I really doubt you would get anywhere near £1000, i'm still paying £1100 and that's at 18 with 1 year NCB.0 -
Definitely check out quotes BEFORE you purchase a car.
Don't assume that because it's small it will be cheapest.
Some small cars are tagged as "boy racer" and therefore higher insurance.
It might be worth considering "pass plus".
You can do quotes with and without pass plus to see the difference.
If you use search engines, then only use real contact info if you want to get a lot of calls about insurance.0 -
How about reading the hundreds of threads on this board asking exactly the same question?! The answer is always the same!!I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

To be honest with you. Any guy is going to have a hard time, whether the car is classed as a "Boy Racer" car or not. All insurance companies assume that young male drivers are Boy racers, regardless of vehicle. Which sickens me.0 -

No they don't. The young boy behind the wheel is inexperienced and much more likely to have a crash causing a lot of damage than any other group. Insurance is based on risk - young males drivers carry the greatest risk, so it costs more for their insurance. What's sickening about that?I was born too late, into a world that doesn't care

I know what it's based on, but the stereotype I feel is inappropriate. The sickening part is that young females pay sometimes half the price of young males, when I know a lot more girls that have totalled their cars and had accidents then i do boys.
But yes, i'm angry at those boy racers that are the minority that ruin it for the others.0 -

You need to look at the COST of the accidents rather than the number.
Women (and girls) tend to have less costly accidents.
Even totalling a car is not that costly, relatively speaking.
Maiming a 34 year old male for life so they can't work again costs about £2 million.
Boys tend to have the much more costly accidents.
Maiming or killong a person is more expensive than bending some metal.
Do you think insurance companies would give girls something for free?
Of course not.
I do sympathise about how you feel, but there is a connection between testoterone, mail driving behaviour, the COST of accidents that boys have and the cost of insurance.0
