It depends on the customer vs service provider's interpretation of unlimited.
Unlimited could mean you can access it anytime, not that the amount of data is unlimited.

The Blackberry bolt on is advertised as 'unlimited data', probably why there is no fair usage limit in their Terms & Cond's.

There is a FUP in the T&C's for Blackberry, not sure if that one has changed, but its blinking hard to use that much on a BB thanks to its data compression, I've tried. :rotfl:

Due to the max download speed and time, there will be a maximum usage in any given period, but as said, unless someone is streaming constantly , they should not appear on the radar, I have my netbook connected to my handset and sometimes it is on for 9hrs per working day, could only hit just under 1gb in a month and the netbook will use more than on a handset, so I can't see how a phone user is going to use that much, even with the traffic alert on my handset, it does not use that much data and that is updating every few mins :j

I've never used my phone for internet so I really don't understand the usage. Once my blackberry simplicity simcard arrives I will be using it for Blackberry IM, check emails and facebook when I'm not at the laptop but I don't intend on browsing alot of websites and downloading so I doubt I would exceed my monthly 'unlimited data' usage :)

There's only 2 options here. Either...

    1) usage is 'unlimited', which means that to all intents and purposes, you can use as much as you like, as long as you aren't negatively impacting the experience of other users. In this scenario, it means that people who use a lot of data can usually use a lot of data, but may sometimes be restricted.

    Or...

    2) everyone has a limit, which means the people who use a lot of data will either have to cut down their usage, or it will cost them dearly in overage charges. No ones use ever has to be restricted as everyone has a set amount.

Call me crazy, but option 1 sounds like the best solution to me. It lets those who use a lot of data use a lot of data most of the time, but has a system in place to protect the overall experience of all users.

People spend all their time complaining about the use of the word 'unlimited', when in actual fact, I think it is the better option of the 2. Those who use a lot of data and are restricted, and complain that 'unlimited' doesn't actually mean unlimited, will be complaining a lot more when their £7.50 bolton only buys them, let's say, 500mb of data. It would probably end up costing them more if there were set limites. I say, keep you gob shut while the going's good!

    billing systems are computerised

computers allocate numerical values to everything relating to billing

even if your fair useage policy was 1000000gb, the computer would still have to convert that into a number that it understands

and there ends todays i.t lesson
