Well at least it's no longer a modem. :)

Did you say in your original post that this has originally worked on the desktop PC under Win 7? If so has anything changed since? Antivirus/firewall software etc.
no nothing has changed since only that i appear to have a public network not a home network see earlier post
    thankyou
  • Taking things back to basics. The ethernet cable plugged into your PC...is the ethernet port on your PC built into the motherboard on the PC or is it a separate card? Does it have any LEDs on it to indicate connectivity? Do you have a spare ethernet cable to try it with?

You said in post #41 that you get a "no network" message using the ethernet cable with your son's laptop which is what you are using to post these replies when connected wirelessly so there could be a cable issue.

oh here we go lol my ethernet cable plugs into the back of my unit for the pc and all the other wires connect there too, there are not indicators except when the ethernet is not plugged in i get an icon bottom right of comp with a x through it so i know its unplugged
i dont have a spare cable and the computer man said there was nothing wrong with my cable as he tried it

please see my reply as above (under your quote) thankyou
  • I also concur with Macman on post #25. As the wireless connection via the laptop appears to work ok I'd consider fitting a PCI wireless card into your desktop PC and going the wireless route. This would probably work out a lot cheaper than taking it into a shop to get them to "look at it".

Go to Control Panel/Network and Sharing ..... yet again, it should show you a diagram on the second line there should be something like Network and underneath Public Network in blue click that then select home network and we should be in business.
You may have missed my last post so have repeated for you

We have gone passed that , we just need to get over getting the network to be Home not Public, as per my previous posts

The public network simply restricts file sharing on the PC that is connecting.

"To help protect your computer on Public networks, discovery of other computers and devices on the network will be limited, and the use of the network by some programs might be restricted."

I've just changed my settings from Home to Public and am typing this logged onto my network which I've told Win 7 is a "public" network.

Guys, it can't be an ethernet cable or network card problem if it worked at the PC shop when connected up there.
Some sort of IP address problem? But wasn't that checked out much earlier?
And if it were, why wouldn't the laptop work when connected by ethernet?
Something just doesn't add up here.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
