Guys, it can't be an ethernet cable or network card problem if it worked at the PC shop when connected up there.
Some sort of IP address problem? But wasn't that checked out much earlier?
And if it were, why wouldn't the laptop work when connected by ethernet?
Something just doesn't add up here.

Indeed. The HH is obviously connected to the internet as the OP is replying here. If the same hardware setup "worked" at the computer shop then the local IP addresses must have been ok. There should be no reason why these would change when taken back to the OP's home. Unfortunately (fortunately :)) I don't have a BT homehub so don't know how to get into the DHCP client table on one of them. I'd hazard a guess at typing 192.168.1.254 into a web browser but from then on I'd be going in blind.

In post #21 the laptop worked via ethernet with the wireless switched off. (my head hurts)

Are we now assuming that the upgrading to Windows 7 has nothing to do with this issue?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Hi Macman/Grade_a , at 1823 we had an ip address in the adapter(192.168.1.20 and gway 192.168.1.254 and dns .254 , and the network came up as public, changing that to Home will open up the firewall, and the next step was to to talk th OP through was to ensure that network discovery was turned on. Also I am concerned that DHCP client was not picking up the router which from the son's lappy was stating 192.168.1.254 and that her adapter was saying 192.168.0.5 / 192.168.0.1 for gateway (that could be from the visit to the shop ??? and of course would account for DHCP was not working.. there is a lot of supposition going on by me here though)
Hopefully our OP will get back to the thread tomorrow and we can try to get her through.

Not quite, I found the ip address from the OP's post from her sons lappy, and got her to type it into the TCP/IP V4 properties on the adapter.

Ah, so not DHCP. Probably worth checking that they can ping the router then.

I'm working tomorrow but will check this thread out when I get home. Hopefully everything will be fixed by then. ;)

Woodess.jpg (control panel/network and sharing ) change yours to home network, and then post back to us, sorry i've been down the Jobcentre / shops ?
