windows 7 installed now no network access PLEASE help

Ok on the lappy do start button / then type in cmd and press enter then enter ipconfig in the little black screen
ipconfig not iconfig(could be your typo though) and don't worry its a readonly command like that , is his lappy using windows 7 too or xp or vista

Well done, now on your pc go to the cmd box again and try
ping 192.168.1.254 (sorry mistype) lets see if you have a connection to the bt box.
also can you do the same from the laptop ( just to confirm that the bt modem replies to pings)

Ok we now know that the modem is replying to laptop, but cannot be reached from the desktop. So lets see what's happening with the cable from the desktop.
but first from desktop can you try the ping command but this time
ping 192.168.1.20 and also ping localhost
this is basically making sure that the tcp stack is hooked up to your desktop

right i have pinged 192.168.1.20
and have 4 replys says with 32 bytes of data:
all say 32 time>1ms TTL=128
LOCAL HOST reply 4 times :::1: time>1ms

So far so good (bad ) , ok we will have a look at the cable options now, so look at the back of the desktop where the cable is plugged in and is there a little logo next to the cable that looks like one pc over a line over two pcs, and is a a little green light on too ?

yes where the ethernet cable goes but there is no green light this getting down on my knees is killing me lol

Sorry about the knees , ok in control panel/network and sharing /change adapter settings what does it say under Local Area Connection please is there a red cross and anything else it says too
