Try this first...click the Start menu, then right-click Computer and then Properties. Click Device Manager at the top left of the screen that opens.
Does your wireless card show under the network adapters ?
It could be that Win 7 hasn't installed the driver for your card, in which case, make sure that you are connected to the internet via a wired connection, right click the wireless card entry and select Update Driver Software.

under network adapters it shows via rhine 11 compatible fast ethernet adapter and states that it is working am i in the right place?
thankyou0 -
I've just Googled "via rhine 11" and it's listed as a 10/100 so that appears to be your wired network adapter. Are any devices in device manager showing as not working (possibly a yellow question mark next to them)?
So long as you have a wired connection you could try right-clicking in the device list and selecting scan for hardware changes.
Just out of interest (I had made an assumption) are you trying to get a wireless connection working on the laptop? If so did it previously work under XP?"A nation of plenty so concerned with gain" - Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World0 -
Yes that is the right place and it shows that it has fund the wired connection only, so plug it in to your router and then you can use either MIcrosoft Update, or your PC manufacturere's support pages to try & download the correct driver. I have had exactly this issue and when I went to my PC manufacturer's support website, I could see only a Vista driver to download & not one for Win7. I had nothing to lose, so tried it & it worked. So don't be disheartened if you can't get the device up & running from the Msoft updates.Chris Elvin0

ive done that and nothing comes up when its scanned0

what make/model laptop0
-
ive done this on my desk top (WIRED) which is the one i'm having problems with0

That explains why the wireless isn't working then.
Ok, go into control panel, select network and sharing center, down at the bottom you will see Troubleshoot problems. When it runs select network adapter. Run that and let us know what it comes back with.
[edit]
As your original post says you have an icon saying no network access try right clicking this instead then select troubleshoot problems."A nation of plenty so concerned with gain" - Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World0 -
Does your modem support Windows 7? You said you took it to a shop and they said it worked fine-but were they actually testing it on W7, or another OS?
Make and model of modem would help. If it's an old BT one I very much doubt if there are drivers for W7.
USB modems are effectively obsolete now and you should be using a router, see if you can get one free from BT if you ask nicely.
With a router and ethernet or wireless you will have a better connection than USB, and no more issues with modem drivers. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
it says troubleshooting couldnt identify problem on the local area connection status it says
ipv4 connectivity no network access
ipv6 " " " "
media state enabled
i remember at some point clicking on the icon no network access and it said local area doesnt have a valid ip configuration0
