  • Why are you trying to connect with the Mercury if you have a BT home hub? Still confused.

Running out of ideas here, and still not sure where the mercury modem fits into the puzzle.

Go into control panel, administrative tools then services.

Is the DHCP client service running? Try stopping and restarting it.
done that the dhcp client says automatic the mecury modem is the one i have for my desktop

mercury is the make of my modem
  • Yes, but you don't need it if you have the home hub.

His Home Hub is on the other computer. He doesn't have wireless on the desktop, he doesn't have an ethernet connection to the HH. So he is using an old USB modem to connect the desktop.
    I think...

And presumably a second landline too....?

how about using the plug thing that comes with the home hub (sorry cant think of the name of it) it plugs into your home hub with an Ethernet cable and into the mains and then you have another one in the room with your desktop in and plug the Ethernet into that and your desktop. That is what I have to connect my desktop to the home hub as it has no wireless.
    OR
I think you might need your son to bridge the connection between his Ethernet port and his wireless card before it will let you access through it as I had a similar thing before we had a wireless home hub. Mine had 2 Ethernet cards in the desktop and my laptop connected through its Ethernet and one of the desktop Ethernet's but couldn't do it until I chose to bridge the two ports on the computer allowing access to the net.

    OR
have you got a cross over cable or the straight through kind?
It could be ,you need one kind for if you plug it into the modem and the other if you plug it into the laptop and you are just using the wrong one. I think you need the straight through to go to the modem but a cross over if it is to the laptop but I'm sure someone else will know if I am wrong on that.

Anyway hope there is something in that lot that might help :P

I'm as confused as Grade_A to be honest. Can I just check all the following..

Is the home hub physically in the same room as the desktop? If so then the answer is to cut the mercury modem out of the equation and plug the desktop directly into the home hub via a normal ethernet cable.

If it is in a different physical location - then I am guessing you are either 1/ using the mercury modem as a wireless bridge (i.e. to connect to the home hub wirelessly and then to route the interent vie ethernet to the desktop. OR 2/ the Mercury Modem is into a second landline and connecting to the internet independently of the home hub.

If it isn't in the same room is it 1 or 2 above?

The ancient Mercury modem is not going to be wireless. I think he's got it plugged into the sole landline via a different extension socket.
