Go to the 'run' box in the start menu.
Type "CMD" (without the quotes). A black box will appear. Type
"IPCONFIG" (without the quotes)
If the message that comes back suggests you have no IP address then type
"ipconfig /renew" (without the quotes) and that may solve your issue.
If when you first type ipconfig it does suggest you have an IP copy and paste the message back here.0 -
Again assuming that you are conencting to a router as your original post mentioned your ethernet cable....
Click on the start menu and type CMD into the search box then press ctrl-shift+enter. In the black window that appears type ipconfig /renew then ipconfig /renew6"A nation of plenty so concerned with gain" - Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World0 -
Does your modem support Windows 7? You said you took it to a shop and they said it worked fine-but were they actually testing it on W7, or another OS?
Make and model of modem would help. If it's an old BT one I very much doubt if there are drivers for W7.
USB modems are effectively obsolete now and you should be using a router, see if you can get one free from BT if you ask nicely.
With a router and ethernet or wireless you will have a better connection than USB, and no more issues with modem drivers.
my modem is a mercury had it built when my old computer packed up i dont know the model nos
i am using the desktop via bt homehub
hope this helps

So why don't you just connect the laptop wirelessly via the Home Hub? You don't need a modem. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

no still cant connect
I'm trying to get my head round your setup there.
You're obviously connected to the internet as you're posting here. So, you're trying to get your desktop PC (Win7) working. Your son's laptop is connected (wirelessly) to the BT home hub?
You say when you plug the ethernet cable into your son's laptop it works. Are you switching off the wireless on the laptop when you're doing this? It may still be using the wireless connection.
If your desktop is getting a local IP address as your previous post suggests and your router is obviously connected to the internet then we can't be far off a solution.
[edit] I'm still confused where the mercury modem comes into this though."A nation of plenty so concerned with gain" - Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World0 -
