Can you just tell us what sort of modem you have and what is it connected to?
Is it a USB modem and connected direct to a phone socket?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

That is not a modem, it's a wireless router (which also has a modem built in, so strictly speaking is a wireless modem/router).
Please can you recap on the basics of the set-up? Is the HH in the same room as the problem PC, if so how are they connected? And how is the other machine (the working one) connected?
The 'Mercury modem' has introduced a major red herring here, as you said you had taken your modem to a shop and had it tested-were you therefore talking about the Home Hub when you said that?

when i went to the computer shop i took the hard drive the ethernet cable and the home hub and he connected straight away

    Thanks for clarifying that.
BTW, what you are referring to as the 'hard drive' is the PC's base unit. The hard drive is a small box inside the base unit.
So what we can determine is that there is no fault on the WAN side of the HH, since you can connect to it OK by wireless, and on to the internet.
Have you tried using a different port on the HH-there are usually 4 network ports?
What are the diagnostic lights on the HH telling you?
Edit: on the HH 2.0 you should have Power, Broadband, Wireless and Phone Illuminated.
What happens if you connect the laptop to the HH by ethernet rather than wireless?

yes i have tried connecting the ethernet to all the ports and switching the ends around (they had me doing allsorts when i rang bt) the diagnostic lights on the hh are all blue (bt also confirmed there is no problem with the hh)
initially my son conected the laptop to the hh via ethernet and the computer man did the same and it was ok but now it wont work and says no network Access the same as my desk top:(
