i am connected to the internet via my sons lap top wirelessly to the bt home hub and i have also connected the laptop with the ethernet to confirm that the cable is working and yes we did switch off the wireless when doing this .
Ok, with your son's laptop connected via ethernet and the wireless switched off... do the run CMD thing and just type Ipconfig without the /renew at the end....what IP address does it have?"A nation of plenty so concerned with gain" - Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World0 -

connection-specific dns suffix home
ipv6 fe80.dc6c:ifeo:e901:17f6%11
sub net 255.255.255.0
def 192.168.1.2540 -
i have done the ipconfig and it states
the link local ipv6 adress fe80::2801:b5ca:8823:ecde11
ipv4 address 192.168.05
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.0.1
thankyou
OK - so your network adaptor is working. Just no internet.
It may be that there is an IP Clash (i.e. 192.168.0.5 has been given to two machine on your network and the router doesn't like this).
Do try typing "ipconfig /release" then when it has done its thing "ipconfig /renew" in the CMD box. (no quotes). After that just type "Ipconfig" again and post what it says here.
I am also assuming you have tried the very obvious and rebooted both your router and your desktop PC? I'm also assuming that you have never had the internet working on Windows 7 since installed so you can't just do a system restore.0 -

Might still be better to use a USB wireless adapter or wireless PCI card on the desktop to connect to the Home Hub. A 'Mercury' modem has got to be around 8 years old now, just a completely outdated way to connect. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
it says

The default gateway on your son's is 192.168.1.254 which is correct for the bT home hub. Your desktop is showing as 192.168.0.1 which is in a different range. Do you have any other devices connected to your home hub that could be assigning IP addresses? (NAS drive etc). Try as the previous poster suggested using ipconfig /release to clear the IP address then with nothing but your desktop connected to the home hub reboot the home hub, wait a minute then reboot the PC and try Ipconfig /renew."A nation of plenty so concerned with gain" - Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World0 -

Running out of ideas here, and still not sure where the mercury modem fits into the puzzle.
Go into control panel, administrative tools then services.
Is the DHCP client service running? Try stopping and restarting it."A nation of plenty so concerned with gain" - Isley Brothers - Harvest for the World0 -
the guy at the computer shop said he doubts that a wireless usb adapter will work id i cant connect with wired
Correct, but trying it would at least remove the modem as a possible cause of the problem. And (once you have sorted ths problem) it's.a more reliable way of connecting. USB modems are flakey at the best of times and your is frankly ancient-when did Mercury go out of business? No free lunch, and no free laptop0
