ok go to control panel/network and sharing/adapter settings
right click on the wired local area network adapter and select properties
then highlight internet protocol (TCP /IP v4) select properties
    select use follong ip address
    type in 192 168 001 020
    then subnet mask 255 255 255 000
    default gateway 192 168 001 254
    dns 192 168 001 254
    select ok
    it should work

Just kicked other half off of our wired PC so I can look at it from there so I know what I am telling you one way or the other,
Go to Control Panel/Network and Sharing ..... yet again it should show you a diagram on the second line there should be something like Network and underneath Public Network in blue click that then select home network and we should be in business.
Trying to diagnose with a bad memory is not my forte :o The park bench jogged my memory a bit

Yes , If you have only one Windows 7 PC in the house then you don't need to set up a homegroup , and can share printers if you wish i.e. with sons lappy if you wish , also public documents.

    yes your right silly me

Well at least it's no longer a modem. :)

Did you say in your original post that this has originally worked on the desktop PC under Win 7? If so has anything changed since? Antivirus/firewall software etc.
