I currently have a basic online Halifax account and am happy with the service I get. Online banking is great for knowing your balance at any time.

My question is are there any other basic bank accounts that offer online banking, debit card (Visa Electron is absolutely fine) and a cheque book for those rare times when you still need to pay cheques (school trips, EBAY etc). I am not looking for cheque guarantee card nor overdraft.

I plan to go sue Halifax for between £1500 and £2000 over the last 6 years and like one of the contributors above I may need 28 days to enable my salary to be transfered by BACS monthly and maintain direct debit and standing order payments

CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IS THE SAME LAW IN NORTHERN IRELAND FOR ASKING FOR REFUNDS SAME AS REST OF THE UK?
  • Bank: Halifax
    Amount Claimed: £2607.00
    Amount Reclaimed: £3902.00!!

I sent my first letter to the Halifax on the 1st December 2006 asking for my bank charges to be refunded to me a total of £2607.00.

I recieved a reply from the Halifax on the 5th Dcember 2006 stating that my complaint was being passed to a customer relations manager and I would hear back from them in four weeks.

This morning, 13th Dcember 2006, I have recieved an offer of £3902.00 which I am going to accept as it is more than I orginally asked for (they must know something I don't!!).

Anyway it has come in time for Christmas so I will be able to treat my small children to a decent Christmas for once.

I am amazed how easy it has been to get my money back, it has taken just thirteen days.

Thanks to Martin and his great web site. Goodluck to everyone who is currently seeking refunds on the Banks outrageous charges.

    Merry Christmas!!

did you use the template with 14 days notice or just write asking for money back? or is it requesting the list of charges & statements? 1st letter should be 14 days. give them a buzz and chase and send reminder letter in post

  • Newcook, thanks for you support. I really hope you get your money back!! I still can't believe how easy it was for me. It still hasn't sunk in yet. This will make a real difference to me and my family.

I hope you have as much success and and a fantastic Christmas!!
  • yes i used the template letter. should i send it again recorded and assumethey didnt receive the first letter
  • Had plenty of fun with the RBS!!

Firstly, they said i had to send a cheque to them for £5 although i had authorised that they take this from my account. I spoke with the branch over the telephone and got fobbed off, i went into the branch and sat with the manager, i made her aware that i requested this info back in Oct and that the 40 days was nearly up, she called 'Regularty and Risk Team' and arranged for the £5 to be debited from my account, i then came home to find a letter on my doorstep claiming that i had to send a letter in authorising the £5 debit!

I spoke with the Reg & Risk team and advised them that it was now over the 40days and i would be filing a complaint with the DPA commissioner. They said the statements would be with me in 3 days...

I still filed the complaint... Awaiting statements.

    HALIFAX!
Similar sort of mess, wouldn't debit my account as i was overdrawn, i explained i was over drawn due to their charges and they said, 'ok, we'll debit it in this circumstance'

I then got a letter stating this wouldn't happen...

Called Tele-banking and kicked off, they arranged the statements free of charge and owe me £538, sent the request with 14 days to pay on the 11th, hopefully i'll get a response prior to the 14th day (25 December!!).

from what I can remember (I know I have read it somewhereon here!) you need to send another letter reminding them of the date of which they should have complied by but as a goodwill gesture you will give them an additional 7 days. remind them that if they fail to respond to YOUR timescale again you will commence the claim through court. if on D-Day they have still not replied go to Money Claim online and file it via them. remember this is your money you are chasing and it is your timescale they need to comply with.
