law_333 wrote:ive sent a letter to barclays claiming £945 back over the last 3 years of having an account with them.
surprisingly i was only charged £5 for all my statements and they arrived within 6 days!
i used http://www.govanlc.com/bankcharges.html for the letter templates. in the first letter it says that if the money isnt in my account within 7 days of recieving it i'll start court proceedings.
does anyone in the know think this will work? i work free-lance and work has dried up as usual in the run up to xmas so could really do with the extra money!
It may work, but you need to be careful. If they decide to let you take them to court, you need to show you've given them sufficient chance to respond and settle out of court. The court will not be impressed if you have brought the case because you haven't bothered to wait.0 -
IntheMoneyIhope wrote:One problem - in my eagerness to get the letter off I forgot to put my cheque in the envelope for £10.
Does anyone think I should still send it or should I keep quiet and see if they request it??
The 40 days doesn't officially start until the fee has been paid, however some banks waive the cost. If you don't want any delays, you should send the money, if you don't mind waiting, you can see if they send for free.0 -
Takecareofpennies wrote:I am chasing down First Direct as we speak,,,just wanted to know if I could get my 'excessive' charges back from the Student Loans Co ???- I think they are attached to the Government - now that would be interesting!
Many student loans were sold off, so you may find claiming against the company that now administers the loans not quite as satisfying!0 -
antispam246 wrote:It states within the template a request for "bank charges" and if not then "6 years worth of statements". I'm about to start this process of and due to other bank related subjects i'm tackling "6 years of statements" would be extremely helpful. So my query is, am I entitled to modify the request to ask for both? I'm just unsure on exactly how I should structure it, seeing as the 6 years of statements is offered as a backup should they not bother with working out the exact charges for you. Any suggestions on how I'd should approach asking for both, or should I simply ask for the 6 years of statements knowing(?) that by asking for both they'll simply send the latter leaving me to find the charges myself?
You must ask for the details of charges under the Data Protection Act. How they provide these details is up to them. The vast majority just supply statements because it's easier. If you just ask for statements and don't make it clear that you actually want a list of charges under the DPA, some banks assume you want statement copies and quote £10 per page or something ridiculous. It's best not to assume what the bank is going to do, as they can be unpredictable!0 -
Posted letters to Natwest for 2 accounts last night, now I wait the 2 weeks to see what happens, we are skint so hopefully there will be no probs and we will get an offer close to the total of just under £4k.

Hi all,
Just got a letter from Barclays offering me £275 as a gesture of goodwill. I wrote trying to claim £535 (before interest). Called them and was told they couldn't up it as it was a gesture, but she could go up to £350!!! I don't understand this bit either. Told them no thanks. Will call them in a bit and see if they've had a change of heart!0 -
I just got my list of charges from Cahoot. I emailed them via the website and requested them to see if they would just send them or charge me. They plopped on my doormat this morning! Just thought if anyone else is going to contact cahoot they should try that first before sending any money....
Charges are £1,155 (£1,298.67 with interest) yikes!!!
Wish me luck with my claim!:xmassmile0 -

Hi,
First post, sorry if it's in totally the wrong place!?
Im looking for an article/advice on claiming back VISA payment protection charges as i asked NOT to have this service when i applied for the card.
The problem is I have had the card for a couple of years and its only now (inspired by this site!) that ive decided to do something if possible?
Many thanks0 -
A basic question. Would the 'reclaim bank charges approach' only work with currently open accounts? or could you attempt to reclaim charges for accounts that you had have in the past but are now closed?0
