This thread is especially to report your successes taking on the banks to reclaim unfair charges.
The aim is to show others that it is possible and it works.
Please report your successes here, if possible in the format

    Bank: Nat West

    Amount Reclaimed:£532.00
    Amount they paid:£532.00
The story: I incurred bank charges of £532.00 five and six yrs
ago! Nat west ignored my first lettter but responded to the second letter sayning I was going to take it to the small claims court . They sent me two A4 size letter explaining that I knew the charges etc before , however as a gesture of goodwill they will
    refund my charges!! YIPPEE!!!
So thanks to you I'm booking another holiday.
Your template letters were an absolute godsend!!! Thank you so much again!!!

(just a few sentences, please include how far you went did you a. just write a letter, b. threaten to go to court or c. actually go to court ) Please don't use this thread for general discussion on reclaiming bank charges.

  • Mrs A from Bedford

My husband and I Started on the reclaim bank charge trail on 22nd February 2007.
I was claiming for £2,477.17 (including interest) for charges made by HSBC over the last 6 years.
To be honest I didn't hold out much hope, but with the help of this site and the template letters I received a letter 3 weeks after saying that the bank was looking into my claim.

A month went by and nothing!! So, I called them. I recieved a letter in the post offering to pay me £1,779.59 in settlement of my claim. I could not sign the form they sent me quick enough. I know it is not the full amount, but, I think it is a large enough offer to accept, and they have not closed my account!

Moral of this story - do not be put off - go for it.

I can finally post on this thread after more than 2 months of reading!!

Sent first letter 15.03.07 Total amount £6665
Got response 4 days later saying it could take 8 weeks etc etc
Waited 8 weeks for personal reasons
Got response saying they were declining my request 10.05.07
phoned immediatly and told them not good enough, they said it will go back into the system and take another 8 weeks
Filed MCOL on 15.05.07 for £4301 (less because I appreciate they have some costs and I wanted to stay small claims) + interest + costs total £5094

Yesterday they acknowledged claim, and paid £3170 into my account!? Phoned this morning said thanks alot but thats not enough...Said I would settle for £4000 (wish I had said more now!) and she agreed :T The differance will be in my account within 14 days and I shall cancel MCOL! The last bit was easy peasy:T

We dont have many financial worries these days, we had an awful time years ago but got to almost floating on top, so this money is for luxuries, and my family so deserve that as we've had a dreadful couple of years. I am sooooo pleased :T :T :T

Thanks for all the inspiration!! And thanks Martin!!

  • Amount Claimed £540
    Received £492

Phoned and asked for statements of this closed account. (had been via the debt collectors too) oops!!

They sent me a summary of transactions free of charge within 5 days of the call.

I sent letter one asking for a refund, and low and behold, 7 days later got an offer of settlement as above!!!

I think that as I caused them pain, the account is closed and they have responded so quicly, I'll accept the amount.

Waiting for Nationwide to defend MCOL at the moment, pity they aren't as easy as Cap 1!!!

Today, after no correspondence from NatWest, and at the final hour before I take them to court, I received a letter from them.

It stated that they do not admit the charges are unlawful, and that they believe them to be fair and transparent.

    Next Page...

However, we are prepared to pay you the full amount, sign this form, send it back to us and we'll transfer the money directly into your account.

    Result!

    £783 recovered.

Thanks to everyone for their help and brilliant advice, couldn't have done it without you, and thanks Martin.

I reclaimed these charges on behalf of my student son. Am pleased it only took two letters (I did not claim interest as felt my son had some responsibility for going over overdraft).:T
  • Bank: HSBC
    Amount Claimed: £4898
    Amount Repaid: £4779
I recieved a letter of offer the day after the 14 day expiry period of my second letter, I had planned to spend the evening filing my online claim but the letter was on the doormat when I came home from work. I can now pay off my overdraft, pay one credit card off completely and make a sizeable dent my other one which means my debt snowballing can really gather pace.
Scrutinizing my bank statements has made me see just how underhand my bank have been in their dealings, putting debits through before credits and saying that my salary which is paid via bacs was not cleared funds and so charging me £100 a pop for being over my overdraft limit for 12 hours.
I teach financial literacy and warn all my students about the tactics that banks use to prise more money out of us

Claimed £741 originally from the halifax. But they didnt play the game. So itook them to court. They then kept messing me about regarding my so called overdraft.
They said they would pay me the full amount (£741 + £80 court cost) but would deduct £75 due to my account being overdrawn. My account was £2 in credit and they took two lots of charges out. Taking me overdrawn. So no i was going all the way.

Judgement was issued on the 20th April 07. For two weeks i called them. on three occaisions was told that the cheque had been posted. by the 10th May i had enough and issued a warrent. How can they lie and expect me not to notice???

Within a few days i received a letter from the legal team. I called them to rectify this matter and was assured the cheque for the full amount would be posted. This was Friday 18th May. Come Tuesday still no cheque. I called again and was told that it in fact gone out on the Tuesday first thing and she apologised to me.
Today is Thursday. Still no cheque. I called the court so they can action the warrent. And was told they have recieved a letter from the Halifax to say that they have paid me direct.
Called the Halifax to get yet another apology and be told that she has the cheque in her hand, How had they managed to get a letter to the court but not managed to send my cheque??

AS far as im concerned i dont want the cheque now. I want the Bailiffs to go in and take them for every penny they can. I want them to know they cant Lie to people and think it wont come back at them. BANKS ANNOY ME soooo much.... TO anyone reading this.
TAKE THEM FOR ALL YOU CAN... after all they have been doing it long enough.!!!!

    Total Money Due: £741 + £80 (court fee) + £55 ( Warrant)= £876.

DONT GIVE UP AND NEVER SETTLE... thats my advice as they are just waiting for people to back down.. I WILL NEVER BACK DOWN EVEN IF I LOSE.... Their name is more important to them then mine is to me!!!
