wrote two letters to bank asking for refund, they wrote back saying that it was terms and comditions etc. submitted onlinre claim form on 5th march and notice served to bank on 1oth march recived notice of halifax inteant to defend on 22nd march but today recieved a letter to notify myself that as a gesture of goodwill they are paying back the full amount plus the online court fee into my account within next seven days. thanks martin, and to everyone on these boards for the help and support they give. :j
  • Bank: First Direct
    Amount Reclaimed: £3,000 approx
    Amount they paid: £2,300
The story: First Direct lost my bank statements when I requested them and rejected my initial claim saying that I'd understood the terms and conditions when I opened the account. This delayed my application for about 3 months and had me thinking I was in the wrong again. However, as soon as I worked up the courage to threaten court action, they sent me an offer within 7 days (with a pre-printed acceptance letter for me to sign and an SAE). They obviously have a whole department processing these claims and you just need to have the courage to threaten court action (and mean it). I was happy to accept their offer but probably could have pursued them for the interest as well. I am most grateful to moneysavingexpert for the courage to take on First Direct

OH recently changed his gold account to a offset and for the past 14 months have been charged £10.00 a month. After many enquries etc,we were told this charge was due to us having a gold offset account and as you can not have both???? (must be one or another!!)

We were told that we should have been informed of this? which of course no one had so they decided to charge us anyway. But after going through a years worth of statements with a member of staff, they admitted that they had made an error!!!;)

We recieved a phone call later that day from our local branch who very kindly said £150.00 was in our account!!!! FAB!:j

We found it very straight forward and there were no quibbles(might of been different if it was thousands I guess, but still a small victory all the same!)
I like to take one day at a time....but quite often several days attack me at once...
  • Bank: Barclays
    Amount Reclaimed: £2295.00
    Amount they paid: £2975.00
The story: I did this claim on behalf of my girlfriend, she called up the bank requesting statements which they tcharged her only £5 for six years banking history. They arrived in good time. So I sent thru them and was shocked by the amounts of bank charges she incurred i six years... anyway i totalled it all up and when i checked it the 1st time i calculated £3020.
So we then wrote back to the bank requesting this amount back. Two weeks later we got a letter from Barclays stating that they were going to pay £2295 no more and no less and if we agreed to the amount that they would place the funds back into the account.
Me and my girlfriend were in two minds whether to claim the full amount or take the settlement. I was in the process of writing a 2nd letter refusing the amount and asking for the full amount. I calculated the charges again just to be sure and it turns out that the £3020 i calculated the 1st time round wasnt the correct figure it was actually £2975.00 (Where i got the xtra £45, who knows) In the end we took the settlement, £2295 is a huge some of money especially when you dont have any money...
That money will go a long way for us right now.

    HALIFAX BANK

    CLAIMED: £309.49 inc Interest
    RECEIVED: £242

Already had all my bank statements so didn't need to go through that stage.

Sent 1st letter off on 1st March with details of all charges attached - received acknowledgement letter from them dated 7th March saying they are sorry I am unhappy etc etc but we have 8 weeks in which to deal.

Sent 2nd letter (LBA) off on 15th March - heard nothing else until today when I got a call from the Halifax regarding my claim for bank charges and that they would offer me £200 as a goodwill gesture. I told the guy that I would be happy settling for £242 which is what the bank had taken from me - he went on to say that the bank needs to keep some of the fees but I then explained that my next step was court action and on top of the £242, I would want interest plus the court fee - he agreed with me and then said OK we will settle on £242 ;) .

He is sending out a letter for me to sign and send back within 14 days and I will most certainly be doing that :rotfl: .
  • Bank: MBNA (Platinum Mastercard)
    Claimed £250
    Received £250

Sent the letter as per the web-site, received a letter investigating.
Recieved letter stating that MBNA felt the charges were fair, however they woudl credit my acocunt wiht the charges levied. SUCCESS!
Only took 3-4 weeks with one letter.

Now trying to claim £950 from Barclays and should have heard back today. I'll give it a couple of days.
  • Just wanted to say thanks, we helped our son, with your help and template letters to claim his charges from his Bank. Today he got over £1500 back which works out about 75% of original charges and he is a VERY VERY happy young man. He decided to accept this offer and said Im not £600ish quid down but over £1500 quid up cos I thought i'd seen last of that money. So dont be put off we were lucky maybe and had no problems whatsoever every thing happened with absolutely no hassle, we can assure you its well worth it and our soon will agree when he gets back from booking his holiday in the sun!!!!!!!!
