  • Bank: First Direct
Amount Reclaimed: Over £1200 including interest
    Amount they paid: £964
    The story:

We only sent the first letter along with the charge list on the 4th March 2007. We recieved a reply today (19th March) stating they will pay us back for our charges but not interest - £964!

We didn't even need to send the second letter - I think the banks must received so many letters in Martin's style that they recognise we will automatically just send the second and third letters anyway - So why waste their time saying no?.

Fabaroo - Thanks Martin - Keep fighting for the consumer! :money:
  • Martin thank you very much for such a brilliant website and your connections with Consumer Action. I received £2,000 from Nat West, being the amount I claimed and the stage I received with Nat West was writing to the court, given a court date.

Very many thanks - I am now going to proceed with one of my credit card companies now!.

    All the best
  • A VERY VERY big thank you. I successfully claimed back over £600.00 in bank charges last year from the Halifax. My daughter incured bank charge's but as she was in her overdraft we did not believe she could reclaim these.

Having subscribed to this website I saw the article in January saying that she still could reclaim these even though she was in her overdraft facility. So we filled out the form from here and sent it to the Halifax and today we have recieved letter offering the full amount of £1011.99 that we had claimed in bank charges for the last 4 years.

I can not recommend this action enough to any one who has incured bank charges and I can not thank Martin or MoneySavingExpert.Com highly enough to any one and every one I talk too.

I am proud to have the sticker "Legally Rob a Bank MoneySavingExpert.Com. in the window of my car.

Thanks for the guidance in your website.:A

Sent first letter to LLoyds TSB on both personal account and joint account got standard letter stating the charges were fair and legal. Therefore replied with second letter offering a discount and advising that I would go to Court.

After 1 month I was preparing to start the court claim when out of the blue a letter arrived advising they would pay £750 asa goodwill gesture. the next day another letter for the joint account also offerin £750

 The Money then took 19 days to reach my account, but as it has cleared the overdraft completely:j , I am stopping at this point happy that I can now close the account in a few months when I have arranged a new bank account with another bank.:T

As mentioned by others, some banks really push it to the wire
before doing the decent thing. It's great to stick it to them
    for once!!!!

Amount claimed - £1300 incl interest and court cost
    Amount refunded £1300

Thought I was never going to post on this thread. Started this off 29th Nov to request list of charges.

Took it to the small claims court, received £750 ex gratia payment but decided to carry on with the claim for the balance of £550. Was granted judgement by default over a week ago and thought I would have to send the bailiffs in as no money received.

Just got home and checked online, money is in the bank!

Thank you to everyone, this has made my day even though I knew I would get it. It makes a big difference to us financially and is a step further along the debt free road.

  • Bank: Barclays
    Amount Reclaimed:£500
    Amount they paid:£375 (75%)
The story: I did this on behalf of my OH (he did very little except count up the charges when the statements arrived - lazy ***!). Sent Martins first letter on 12th Feb along with cheque for £10. Barclays replied pretty quickly, returning the cheque and saying that they couldn't supply details of the charges but would send copies of statements for the past 6 years free of charge.

Not long after, 4 large envelopes arrived containing 6 years worth of statements!!

Sent Martins 2nd letter on 10th March, listing charges on a separate sheet.

Received letter yesterday (20th March) offering £375 which OH had already decided to accept, bearing in mind Martins warning about the FSA announcing their decision about fair charges in April. So took 5 weeks and 1 day - not bad.

Can I just say thank you to Martin for making this easier for me? OH didn't like the first letter until he found out that it came from Martins template as opposed to me writing it myself. He thinks Martin is a God (except for the suggestion that savings should be used to pay off debt - but he doesn't understand the concept completely, ie. leave yourself with an emergency fund but use "excess" savings to pay the debt off) but he won't listen to me until someone else tells him the same thing I've been telling him for months. I learnt about dealing with debt about 6 years ago and he thinks I don't know anything - waiting for him to have his lightbulb moment and work it all out.

Sorry, totally off-topic but took the opportunity to let off a bit of steam!

The story: I used the template letter and followed the instructions on site. Got my money back in the bank account in less than 6 weeks; not even having to write a 2nd letter, really smooth! Thank you so much MSE!
