If they're offering free lists of charges take it every time. You might be surprised and find some charges you didn't know about.

Compare them to any old statements you may have too. Abbey is one bank who have been reported in the press as omitting charges from requested statements and the discrepancy was discovered on comparison with the customers own old statements. Just a tip for you ;)

    Amount Claimed: £1197
    Amount Paid £1000

I wrote the initial letter after gathering the information from my statements and they tried to fob me off with the usual letter, I then threatened court action, following this up with 2 phone calls to try to settle before hand, they were not interested. I took it to court via MCOL and they acknowledged the claim 1 day before the 14 days were up! I then received a letter offering a measely £638 as a "gesture of goodwill" which I called to say was not acceptable. They asked if I felt a charge should be made when I go over my overdraft and I foolishly said yes, but certainly nothing to the scale of what they charge. She then offered £900 I refused and said I would not accept less than the full amount, they then said that there was no ruling to say they should charge a certain amount blah blah, I stood my ground and she asked what I would accept so I offered £1100, I can live without the £97, she then said she would meet me half way with £1000. I did feel a little intimidated but I stuck to my guns, she did try to confuse me with legal jargon! All in all it was a 15 minute negotiation!

Anyway, another success, it's £1000 I thought I had lost. I can now pay off all my credit cards and I shall never bank with Halifax again.

    Thank you MSE. :-)
  • Started down this road on 19th February claiming for £3250, received an offer letter on Saturday 17th March offering £2500. :T

We have accepted as having hte money in the next ten days will make a huge difference, as we have outstanding Council Tax and the Baliffs are being really horrid and unreasonable.

Yes we could have held out for more but it is enough money to make a real difference at the right time for us

So for all those starting or in the middle - fingers crossed and do what is right for you.

Started process off on 20th Feb 2007 and got offer 15th March 2007. Claimed for £951 and got offer of £784. Pleased with this, nice windfall and so easy to do if you follow the advice on this site.
Good luck to all still carrying out the process and thanks to this Website for the information and support.

    hey :)

Was the offer off the back of your 1st or second request for refund letter. If off your second then enter your court claim. Send a letter to monument saying thanks for the offer but no thanks - accept as partial payment towards the claim but you are taking them to court for the remainder, and a reminder that the claim will now require them to pay statutory interest and court fees on top.

No you wont - you gave them 14 days in your first leter - so on day 15 send your second letter.

    ALWAYS stick to YOUR timetable.
