  • Bank : HSBC
    Amount reclaimed : £855 + pence
    Amount they paid : £710

HSBC is the first one of three that I'm trying to reclaim - their first offer was £710 which I accepted straightaway, this is going to be in my account within a week. I know that I probably should be pushing for the full amount but it's a good percentage, and, when all's said and done, it's seven hundred quid I thought I'd never see again. Having said which, they still admit no liability and it's just being paid to me instead of their legal and management team. I have no real problem with that.....

You don't need to wait on them, continue with your timescale.

The print out with the dates of the charges and the amounts is ok you do not need to send the statements because they have got access to these there selves.

Also where does this letter go? Is it to the bank's local address where the account is held or to the bank's Head office?

  • Bank: Halifax
    Amount Reclaimed: £1814
    Amount Offered/Accepted: £1762

The Story: I had procrastinated over 'doing the reclaim' for some time as a lot of my charges were caused by my writing cheques with a cheque guarantee card knowing the bank would have to honour them even though the funds weren't available (i saw this as my way of spending the money that was mine but the bank was stealing from my account in charges-a strange angle i know but it was a very difficult time)
That period came to an end with my last charge in Nov 05 and my account was in credit until I made a miscalculation in Jan this year and the bank swooped right in and nabbed 'their' £30. So i dug out my old statements and my first letter was sent on 21/2, a bit doubtful as to my likelihood of success since the way my charges were accrued, but 5 days letter they acknowledged receipt advising their customer relations dept would be dealing with it and yesterday 06/03 i received the offer which i have today accepted. A gesture of goodwill, admitting no liability, who cares-getting my money back-10 days in total.
I'm now going to attempt my -closed and at the debt collectors-credit card. I'm not as optimistic for this but 2/3 of the amount due is charges. As my mother said when i told her of my success, 'It just goes to show, if you don't ask...'

Thanks to Martin, (i've been a silent supporter for a few years) and to everyone for their success stories.

  • Bank: Natwest
    Amount Reclaimed:£4000
    Amount they paid:£3464
    The story:
Recently round at a friends I was told of this website moneysavingexpert.com and how a friend of a friend reclaimed £800 of a possible £900 he was trying to claim. After finding it hard to believe I looked into it via this website thinking I had everything to gain and nothing to lose. I am a terrible banker and my organisational skills with money are awful. I wrote to Natwest requesting 6 yrs worth of bank statements after they refused to give them over counter at i charge of only £5, this certainly isn't a big fee for what could be in exchange what turned to be approx £4000 worth of charges in the last 6 years. I sent the 1st letter to reclaim my charges not holding my breath really giving them a 14 day response time. On the 14th day i contacted Natwest customer complaint line to be told an offer had been drawn up and i would receive the offer within 40 days of the date i first sent the letter (14th feb 07). The disclosed the offer over the phone to me and said it would be in writing on my doorstep within 2 weeks this was yesterday (06th march 07).
This is solid proof it can be achieved some people may not be as lucky as me as it only took me one letter and less than 40 days for them to pay, GOOD LUCK TO ALL WHO TRY, not much to lose (£5) and a lot to gain you will all agree.

    Advice please peeps!

Sent my first (14 day) letter inadvertently to HSBC Canada Square (statements address) recorded delivery but sent my 7 day letter to the correct address in Leeds. I rang to check progress yesterday and they said they hadn't had the first one but that a reply to my second letter would be with me soon.

If i stick to my timescales I should be going to MCOL tomorrow but I don't want to jeopardise the flow of proceedings later if I sent letter 1 to wrong address. But, does the fact that this was sent recorded delivery and received by HSBC in Canada Square still mean they were 'served' correctly?

    Thanks for your help. Lou.
