  • Hi
I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on my situation with HSBC. I have 2 current accounts, one is a joint account with my partner which runs ok and very rarely has had any charges applied and one is my personal acount which to date has an OD of £7500 as I am self employed and have a high turnover of cash and some past money problems. The charges on this account have been obscene and I want to claim them back. The bank has asked me to consolidate this account into a loan and I have recieved the forms but not signed or returned them yet. I also have a personal loan of 14k (was 20k) with HSBC, which I have been paying with no major problems for a couple of years.

    My question is this:

Should I instigate my claim for repayment of charges before the account is consolidated or should I consolidate and then claim. Obviously once I claim they could close the accounts but not any loan accounts as these are on different agreements. (thats my understanding anyway)

I have set up a parachute account just in case but wanted some advice.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, any advice very much appreciated.

  • i reclaimed £760 from halifax bank only took one letter then had a call from customer services to offer settlement it really does work
  • Hello all,

I am new to this site. I am going ahead and making an application to retrieve my charges. I have sent the letter 1 today and am waiting for a response.

Importantly, I used to work for one of the main culprits and was told to advise all customers that they would not be entitled to any refunds as they were bound by the terms and conditions which they had signed voluntarily. However, IRONICALLY, I was told that they are legally entitled to a full refund and that they would get one should they apply for one as the bank would not protest!!! I have now moved to another employer and am am proceeding with my own personal claim!!

    Good luck to all.
  • Just heard on BBC news that tonight's Watchdog programme will explain some of the ways in which banks try to avoid repaying unfair charges.

    Worth a watch I'd say.

Sorry if this has been posted before but there is so much in the forums on this subject I haven't had time to look!
  • :T :j :j OOH MY GOD I WON!!!!!!!
    Halifax £2,500.00
    Nat West £565.00
Hi everyone, i'm so happy i can't believe it , got two letters in the post this morning, one from each bank, Nat West offering me the full amount minus £5.00?! I happily accepted ,this arrived on the final day of letter 3 threatening court action.
2nd letter was from Halifax offering me £1,688.00, I rang them and said thganks but no thanks, the lady asked what i would accept ,i said i would accept £2,500 and no less, and that seeing that it had gone to court i was willing to drop interest if they accepted this, the lady said yes!!!! will be in my account within next 7-10 days, what a result,
thankyou so much Martin and everyone else on this fantastic web site.

Difficult one, yes in theory they shouldn't be able to touch a loan so perhaps you should sign the papers and go ahead with that first. I doubt they will close your accounts as they will expect any reclaim to go towards your debt and they may put this into your loan account.
  • I have had two business accounts for the last 15 years and I had 1 personal account with the same bank. Can I reclaim the charges form the business accounts for the last 6 yearas as well as the now defunct, personal account?
