    Amount Claimed: £25
    Amount repaid: £25

Didn't even write HSBC a proper letter- I simply used their online message service. I received a reply about 3 weeks later saying that the charges were fair and legal and, if it were to go to court, HSBC are certain that they would win, however this would be more costly to them than simply refunding me, so I could have my £25 back but it is in no way an admission that the charges were unfair. Haha, yeah right ;)

    Bank: Lloyds TSB
    Claimed: £30
    Paid: £30
Story: Ok, so this isn't a large amount but I followed Martins advice and it's still a success so I though I would put it on here.

I put a cheque in my current account on the Tuesday and on the Thursday looked at my account online and though 'hurray the cheque has already cleared', so I transfered the money out to my saving account. Actaully the cheque hadn't already cleared, even though it looked as though it had and it let me do the transfer online. So I ended up overdrawn with a charge of £30.

I followed Martins advice and rang Lloyds and said, sorry, this is the first time it has happened to me, I didn't realise they money hadn't cleared, please can you waive the charge and they said 'yes.' It was as easy as that. Just have to make sure I don't do it again now.

  • I was stupid enough to let my Bank account go over my agreed overdraft by something like £93 last July. I had an chat with the Branch Assistant Manager and she agreed to waive the £28 charge and interest and increased my allowed overdraft level. Then the next month I was hit with a £90 "Refferal Fee," whatever that means I have never found out. I rang the Bank and asked to speak to the Manager but was referred to some unkown person who when I explained what had happened very quickly said she would halve the charge to £45. I was prepared to accept this until I read Martin's articles on Bank charges in his e-mail. So I went into the Bank and spoke about it to the Assistant Manager who said there was nothing she could do about the £45 at her level but if I would write her a letter she woud forward it to "Higher Authority". So this I did and waited a month for a reply and as none was forthcoming wrote another letter and included a copy of the first one, all nice and polite. Waited another month, still no reply, so took copies of the first two and a rather stronger phrased letter, mentioning points in Martin's "How to reclaim Bank charges" and delivered them by hand. A few weeks later I received a letter from the Bank saying they unfortunately they had not received my first two letter (Blame it onn Royal Mail) but they could do nothing about the £45 charge at their level, so back to square one. But they did enclose a pamphlet on the Bank's complaints proceedure. So a week ago I wrote to their Customers Relations Manager with my story enclosing all the correspondance. This morning I received a letter from that department stating that the charges had been taken correctly but were happy to refund, on this occasion the £45. They were sorry this had taken several months to resolve due, it appears, to my letters not being received.
So don't give up, because this is what they want you to do. Keep at them and you will get your charges back in the end.

  • Thanks Martin

My girlfriend told me go after NatWest after seeing you on Trevor McDonald. I had paid £1508.62 in fees between December 2000 and July 05.

I was trying to claim the amount plus the interest calculated using the interest calculator on this site. It took me a few letters and I was being fobbed off, but as soon as I threatened them with court, I had a letter in 8 days offering me £1508.62, THE COMPLETE FULL AMOUNT!!! (but without interest)

Thank you very much for telling the world about this. I'm now busy telling all my friends to claim their money back too!

Just waiting for that nice cheque.

    Matt
