    Amount they paid:£164

The story: After reading all of the inspiring stories on this website, I spent an hour going through my bank statements and filling in the letter template. I sent it off a week ago, and today have come home to an offer of the full amount! I can't believe it....I thought it would be more of a battle. Thank you to Martin and everyone who posts on this site. Good luck to everyone else who is going through a claim at the moment. If you are in doubt about whether to claim....I'd say go for it!

I now plan to spread the word to friends, family and work colleagues, and to start working on a claim for credit card fees!

I am about to send my 2nd letter to BOS, I live in Falkirk. How would i find out what court to put on my letter where i would be claiming these back should they fail to respond.

My charges amount to £1769, so i would not be able to go through small claims court.

    Thanks

I have started my court case with Abbey to (hopefully) get my unfair bank charges back, they have deceided to defend the case and have written to me to ask for my evidence on how I worked the charges out and also an email addy and phone number for myself.

Write to them (recorded) and provide another list of charges to them. HERE is an example of how I set them out.

You don't have to provide email and phone numbers if you don't want to. Explain to them you want all communications in writing (it's better this way because you have proof of everything they say to you, and vice versa).

Amount claimed : £564.21 inc interest
Amount received : £564.21 inc interest

Very quick and painless experience - wrote the first letter got a response, I followed it straight away by sending second letter, it took 21 days in total.

Still waiting for second reply from Nat West, they still have a few days to reply to the first letter.

  • Bank: Barclays Bank
    Amount reclamed: none
    Amount refunded: £480

Story: Informal complaint on phone led to bank phoning, sending out complaint leaflet and proactively sending me a cheque of £480. Obviously keen to avoid further claim. Thanks for the free advice

    Bank: Co-operative
Amount reclaimed: 252.36 (charges of 205.00 and interest 47.36)
    Amount paid: 441.00

Story: I do have six years worth of statements except for a glitch between Sept 2003 and April 2005 when I did not receive them) so I totted up 205.00 owed to me and put these into the interest calculator. Sent a polite template letter on 11th Jan 2007.

Got an acknowledgement of my complaint saying they would contact me within 7 days.

Today I checked my account online at work astonished to find a credit of 441.00. I called to ask what it was for as it was labelled as "adj commission".

Got home to find a letter which said amongst other things:
"I can appreciate that you are unhappy with the charges applied to your account. As you are aware, these charges are valid and in line with the T & Cs of the account. It is the responsibility of the customer to monitor the account to ensure that it is kept within agreed limits at all times"

(Yes, if I have the statements!!)

They stated the charges were being refunded as a "goodwill gesture" and they enclosed a printout of the charges with highlighted ones they were paying back. A total of 25.00 on the list was not refunded but I am prepared to let that slide.

I am very very pleased with the result. I will still bank with the Co-op as I agree with their ethical policies however I have also opened Alliance & Leicester's Premier Direct online account so that I can now earn interest on my balance.

Many thanks to Martin for encouraging us all to challenge the banks! :D
  • I have asked RBS to refund £3100 plus £500 in interest. Having not heard from them, I wrote to them again 2 days ago, with Martins second template letter. Letters must have crossed in the post, as today I received an offer to refund £2600 - what is the concensus view ? Should I stick to my guns or accept their offer. They have already refunded £700 on another account (my full claim less the interest).
