Bank: Natwest
Amount claimed: £621
Amount refunded: £621
Time taken: 8 days
I sent Natwest a standard letter from the web, telling them their charges are extortionate and challenging them to prove that it really costs them that amount each time I go overdrawn. Also said a claim would be filed in court in 14 days if they didn't respond. Had a letter back in 8 days with offer of full refund provided no further action is taken. Didnt close my account either! Result! :T :rotfl: :j0 -
claimed £314
offered £296 as a goodwill gesture!! well thats near enough for me!, only took one letter.
Now starting my wifes claim which will be for a more impressive figure, apparantley she thought a weekly £30 charge was the norm for running a bank account!0 -
Bank: HSBC
Amount claimed: £546.00
Amount received: £459.00
Story: I sent only the first letter (downloaded from this website) and one month later have been offered most of my money back, charged over the past six years beginning 2001. A long letter from the bank explaining how withdrawals beyond my overdraft limit (the reason for all the charges) are "informal overdraft requests", then a sudden paragraph at the end offering most of the money back, unlinked to the rest of the letter. Great! I didn't even have to send a second letter!0 -
HSBC
Claimed £1532.50 + £291.27 interest on 30th November
They ignored my first letter, I issued a reminder between Christmas & New Year. They acknowledged the second letter early January with a stall to investigate and reply latest by 2nd February. Today they have offered £1349 as full and final settlement, "for commercial reasons alone, and without any admission of liability whatsoever". I am pleased with it as they have made a fair offer without any resistance. In my first letter I simply wrote asking them to repay all the default charges applied to my account, gave a breakdown and 14 days to respond. When they did not respond I was a bit heavier stating that I thought a court could rule in my favour.
For anyone else thinking about claiming HSBC have not mentioned closing the account or repaying approx £600 on their credit card. So go on give it a go ... it was so easy and I am thrilled !!0 -
First claim I've tried - only a small amount, £36, from credit card account I closed two years ago. Sent one letter requesting repayment and stating law etc. Got letter 10 days later saying would refund in full as gesture of goodwill by cheque within 14 days - and that arrived today. Now going to try Cahoot, Tesco CC and Abbey...0

Hi,
I would just like to say thank you so much for the information and guidence on this site about reclaiming bank charges. I used the template letter to write to my bank and listed all the bank charges I was contesting. What a result! The Royal Bank of Scotland responded within 7 days stating they were looking into my case and within another 7 days they wrote to me stating that as a good will gesture they would credit my account with the full sum. I am now waiting for the full 1500 pounds to be credited to my account.
I was sceptical when I first heard about reclaiming these charges, and never expectd the result I have got with my bank. So, thanks again Martin Lewis, I wil be reading up on all your other advise now!
To all those who have not written to your banks yet I would say definately go for it!:j0 -

Im amazed - In December i ended up over my overdraft because i forgot about my car insurance DD. I went over by £15 and didnt find out about the charge until mid month when i checked my online statement and seen a whopping £75 worth of charges. My salary went in and paid this but with my standing orders and their charges i went over again by £100.
As i didnt have any money to pay this my partner give me the money to get back into my overdraft limits but i couldnt physically pay it in until the saturday morning (day 5) so it meant another £75 in charges.
I followed info from this site (sent the letters supplied - Thanks) and registerd on the moneyclaim site. I sent them a letter last Monday stating i would take court action on Monday (29/1/7) if i didnt get it back.
Ive just checked my online account and they have refunded the £25 paid item charge (not sure if its dec's or Jan's) and removed the pending £50 charge.
So what do i do now? Of the £100 they've taken to date ive had £25 back but still £75 out of pocket. Should i call them or send a new letter?
But smileing like a cheshire cat so far

More to claim but step 1 complete. (Smile)
After bringing my account back into good order I was surprised when a card payment was declined and on checking this found that an additional £150 in charges (added a month after I believe) had been taken that day.
Called immediately to query this explaining that I had returned my account into good order and also that I had been advised when phoning previously to inform them of an impending transfer to clear the overdraft that no further charges would be made to the account and the advisor on the other end of the phone immediately reversed the £150 charge.
Still have another £350-ish to claim back but I am waiting until a couple of other things are set in stone, but to anybody reading this, a quick, polite phone call can be worthwhile.
(No mention of "final settlements" or anything by the way and nothing in writing to prevent my claim for the rest going ahead in a couple of weeks)
My gut feeling is that this proportianally small charge may have been refunded as a kind of "discretionary policy" in the belief that it will serve as goodwill and perhaps not encourage people to seek out information like this forum on reclaiming charges - I made no mention of claiming nor used any terminology related to claiming back charges - just that I had been told no more charges, and charges were taken - no arguing or quibbling.
It's not everything, but at least I have something back in MY pocket rather than theirs for now, which can only be a good thing!0 -
