Reclaimed Bank Charges SUCCESS stories

Bank: First Direct
Amount Reclaimed: £1125
Amount they paid: £1125
The story:
I wrote and asked for a list of charges to my current accounts. They sent a copy of the statements. It took an hour or so to go through and dig out all of the charges and then complete the interest calculator. I sent that off to First Direct using the standard letter.
They wrote back saying that they would get back to me within 10 days and it was actually about a month over Christmas but when they wrote back they settled (without accepting liability) for the full amount! The letter said that they were not prepared to include additional interest however I had already included interest.

Morning all. I wonder if anyone else has had this experience with Barclays. On Tuesday I (and my husband separately) sent our £10 to Barclays asking them to provide either banks statements or a statement of charges made going back 6 years. Last night, at 6.30, I received a phone call from my LOCAL Barclays, saying that I had been getting Paid Referral Charges, and others, and would I care to arrange a meeting with the lady to go and discuss. She was extremely pleasant and had a helpful manner. I said that I had actually commenced proceedings to recover the full amount due to me, and she said she was aware of that. She stated that at the meeting they would provide full information, as requested, and use this to discuss ways in which they could help. At this point I did say that it was a pity that they had not given any help over the past 20 years that I have been a customer, having my mortgage, insurances etc. with Barclays, which she agreed to. I also pointed out that in 12 months time my mortgage with Barclays would be finished, and that I would then be in a far, far, better financial position to the tune of over £700 per month. Anyway, the result is that I am going to meet her on the 1st February, which she is going to confirm in writing.
Should I attend? Is this a tactic on their part, or have Barclays realised that this is happening and they need to be proactive in sorting out the situation? In my opinion, to get a call at 6.30 in the evening shows that they have probably employed people for this process. Also, I wonder how much authority she will have to discuss a settlement.
Has anyone else had such an approach, and if so attended a meeting.0 -
Bank: Alliance and Leicester
Amount Reclaimed: £161
Amount they Paid: £136
The Story:
I followed MSE's advice sending the relevant letters etc. Recieved standard responses each time, even after threatening court action. Sent one final letter saying I didn't really want to bother with the small claims process for the above sum, but would if they didn't offer at least an 80% refund of the charges, they refunded the above within 6 days of posting the letter.
Not a complete success but happy with the final result.:beer:0 -
Hi,
Can anyone tell me if I can reclaim credit card charges on missed payments and going over the credit limit charges? Or is it just the late payment charge that I can reclaim?0 -
maniac886 wrote:I am in a very similar situation, I am claiming from abbey and have a student od with them(£1250). Luckily i managaged to get a acc with co-op bank and they are going to match the overdraft and do a transfer from abbey. I feel safer claiming when i know my account is closed and they cant do anything to me once i get my money back. Have you tried opening another student account and try and transfer over....try and go with co-op/ smile. Its best to have some sort of back-up just in case they turn nasty.
sorry If Im being a bit naive, but its okay for me to close my account? and then still claim on a closed account? is this harder to do, if I transferred my account to a new bank can I keep my abbey account open at £0? will abbey be likely keep my account as a current account rather than a student account?
hope someone can help.
And as for my bad credit? does anyone know of any banks more likely to take me on? and how should I apporach them about trnasferring in this case? cx0 -

I am well mad at the cheek these banks take.
Banks i always thought where you could keep money safe and use it when you needed it but it seems that Banks are heading for the job of !!!!!! Turpin (Highway robber) but in this case it is more like Bank robbery.
My bank is the Halifax and I had received a bank statement from 2005 sent to my to help me with a complaint I have with a mailorder company and at the end of it there where charges of £203 if and when I get my list of default charges I dare not think of how much in the six months the account was open they had taken off me in chages.
Like Martin Lewis mentioned on the radio this morning they charge £35 for a letter to be sent out to you to tell you you have gone over drawn and the letter only cost 31p to post out to you.its more like Highstreet Bank Robbery.

Bank: Barclays
Amount Reclaimed: £420
Amount they paid: £280
Sent my first letter requesting £420 on the 18th December. Received offer on 10th January for £220. Made a phone call to them today and they upped their offer to £280. I've faxed my acceptance over and have been told it will be in my account by tomorrow. I admire everyone who is taking this to the wire but it's £280 I never thought I'd see again so I'm happy with that. Thanks must go to Martin and everyone who offers advice and encouragement on this wonderful site.We finally did it! Debt free 28/6/10 :T  :T :beer:0 -
Bank: Northern Bank (Northern Ireland)
Amount requested : £500
Got : £500
I requested the £500 via the template letter, got a letter offereing half. I then sent the court action threat and just got a letter today offering the full amount!
Thanks to Martin, the Conumer Action group and all those who advised.
All it took was 2 letters.

Somehow I have managed to lose some of my statements that Barclays sent me. When they first sent me them I calculated they owed me £405 and sent them the proof of this and copied them for myself. Now I can only find proof of £280. They have offered me £200 and even after sending them the letter asking for the full £405 or I will take them to court they are still saying £200 is all I'm getting. Now I've said I'm taking them to court will they send me the statements again if I ask for them again or should I just take the £200 they are offering? I really dont know how I have managed to lose some when they were all together.0
