    Hi There

I am claiming bank charges on behalf of my partner. So far we have had £85 from First Direct without any hassle. I have just wrote to Barclays claiming £655 plus interest of £175.77 going back to Feb 2001, will keep you posted on any developments. Also requesting information from an old Barclaycard account to see if there is any charges there to be reclaimed.

Thanks MoneySavingExpert you have saved me a forture!

Hi I need some advice about what to do next!
Im claiming bank charges from the Halifx and have been through the prelim letter for details of charges and sent off my claim to have charges paid back to me but now I have received a letter from the Halifax saying that their charging policy is clearly outlined in the T&C's and that they comply to the Banking Code blah blah blah. In essence, they have offered about a third of what I am claiming "in full and final settlement of your complaint" They say that this represents the highest six months charges since my account was opened. They also stress that all future charges will stand and they reserve the right to close my account if I dont manage my account properly. They also say that if I am unhappy about this I should contact the Financial Ombudsman Service giving tel no and address.

    Can they close my account?
Should I go for the whole amount?

I must admit I'm a bit scared but I don't want them to get away with my money. Any advice please.

    Hi there,

This is a classic case of them trying to intimidate you. They are a huge corporation and they are this big because of the cash they take from us...the customer. The fact remains , it's your cash and they are just trying to dissuade you from persuing them again. Take no notice and kick them again to make them pay up. The law is on our side for once and the banks know this so they are therefore trying to scare you in to submission....Don't let them and you go for it.!! Iv'e won with nationwide and im taking barclays to court and it looks like they are actually going to defend themselves, however their "defence" they sent me is a joke!.(id love to have a video camera!!) I can't wait to have my day in court (feb 27th). You go for it...get your money back!

Hi every one, just a quick query if any one can help, from me starting to reclaim my charges from Barclays in june of last year, i got my allocation letter and paid the dues, the case was moved from northampton to my local court in Wakefield, who say they can not deal with it, and sent it to Leeds county court, on the 24th Oct 06 is this the "norm" and it has seemed ages since i have heard a thing from anywhere, so i was wondering if any one had the same sort of response from there county court
Yes that happened to me. I am in st neots and my nearest county court is huntingdon .However huntingdon sent my claim (with barclays) to cambridge and is sheduled for 27th Feb 2007. I did ask the huntingdon court why and the lady said they are doing a few at a time i think!! anyway I am not scared and can't wait to defend myself and get back what is mine. Good luck for yours too!

  • I'd just like to say thanks for the article on reclaiming bank charges .
After reading about it on this site i challenged my bank about a £25 service charge that appeared on this months bank statement after going overdrawn for 1 day . They immediately offered to refund it and it was back in my account the very next day . :j

Have they since closed your account for claiming?

did you have to go to court, or did the 2 letters do the trick????
  • hiya.i am about to go through my statements as in less than 3 months the natwest has taken over £600 in charges. Personally i shall be asking for a full or at least considerable refund of these charges notwithstanding interest, but shall state that if further action involving litigation and courts be required then interest at the sum of however much accrued at 8% shall be added then give them a total with interest too. .........i shall then go through statements up to 6 years previousely and commenced the whole thing again.......

  • I was helping my son to claim his bank charges after one letter they offered £130 we said how about £260 they said no take us to court which we didnt y want to do unless really necessary, so I wrote to them myself saying I had been an account holder for 30 years and if they didnt pay my son I would change by bank account they wrote straight back offering the asked for £260, I will still be changing my account when I get a minute to investigate the best one to go for. How do you start proceedings on an account that is closed and you have no account no for?

I haven't got that far yet. Nationwide are dragging their heels, they wrote and told me to forward on the fee of £10.00 before they would get my statements but they had in fact cashed the cheque I sent in my initial letter. I had to write to them again and draw their attention to this. :rolleyes2
I'm due to get in touch again as their 40 days were up on the 2nd Jan.

I just wondered if they had closed Parki's account so that I would know what to expect from them.

Rex Mundi:thanks again for your help. Just to let you know I managed to work out the Adobe Reader thingy and have all my documents typed up and ready to file. Just one final point before I go to court. Do I need to enclose a copy of the "14 day letter" with the claim? Btw, got the standard "fob off" letter from Lloyds TSB in that's of any interest to anyone dealing with them. That was from card services. As far as my current account is concerned my local branch hasn't even bothered to reply.
