So as you have your own router that they are still giving away free with AOL Silver, threaten to leave and negotiate your price down to £9.99 per month.

Sorry, I misread your earlier post and thought you had already cancelled.

A MAC is a migration code which you are given by your current ISP when you want to leave.

You quote the MAC to your new ISP, and it makes the transfer a smooth operation - you remain connected to the original ISP until the transfer is completed to the new one, so no down time.

Also it helps with the cost as many ISPs offer better deals to migrating in customers as opposed to brand new connections (you may want to use an ISP that charges a connection fee to new broadband customers, but doesn't charge any fee to migrations).

Though if you are happy to stay with AOL, then take the advice given above and make sure you now only pay £9.99 a month for silver service.
  • Thanks for that, that makes sense, you have all been a great help will keep you posted as to what happens!!!!

Yes - it's worth a try. But don't hold out much hope for the free wireless - they've given you a free month already on top of reducing your sub.

And if you use your MAC, you still need to call them to cancel your account when your new ISP is connected.

    Otherwise they keep billing you.

Your account is not cancelled till they give you a cancellation reference number.

Personally i would stay with AOL, £9.99 a month unlimited is pretty much hard to beat
  • Hi there,

Hope someone can help with the below.

First thing to say is I'm fairly clueless about most things technical!

I've been with AOL dial up for what seems like a lifetime. It's been fine for my use up until now but recently it's been cutting out a lot. Also now I am downloading some large files which can take 30/40 minutes to download on dial up! And I recently purchased a laptop.

I've been aware for a long time that I could get a cheaper deal but must admit to having been lazy about moving because it would mean losing my email address and having to advise everyone of the new one - a headache as I'm signed up to a variety of things which come through regularly to me and online banks etc., etc.,- I saw someone in this post talking about a "migration code" - can someone tell me what this is - is there a way to still receive your AOL emails for a short time if/once you take the plunge and move to another provider?

The main things I'd like to achieve are:

    * A reliable connection/service
    * Wireless, so I don't have to trail lengths of dial up cable across rooms!
    * Faster for when I need to download large files.
    * Ability to use home phone at same time as using PC
    * Unlimited usage - and possibly unlimited downloads as well as I don't know if my need to download is likely to increase (how can you check the size of what you're downloading to see what sort of download limit might suit you?)
    * Don't really mind about a contract tie-in as I wouldn't be inclined to change provider regularly anway (if you move home I assume this wouldn't affect anything?)

Finally the thing I'd really like to be able to achieve is to be able to get online from my laptop wherever I am - so even if I'm far away from any wireless router in my house. I posted about this before and I think people said it wouldn't be possible as there's a distance limit with the wireless router. So an alternative I'm thinking about is getting a "3G datacard" - I read about this in someone else's post on this board and they said they use that to plug into their laptop to get internet connection. Can anyone advise on this - is it a reliable connection and could I use it both with my laptop and PC? What costs are involved for initial purchase and monthly fee? In the same post it said there would then be a £3 a month fee to AOl to keep your AOL account which would be ideal for me as it would mean I wouldn't have to notify everyone of a new email address.

Sorry to be so long-winded - but any help as to my options would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
