I am an existing customer with them (A & L Current account, ISA and savings account) and was declined too. Application put in on Jan 24th, had heard nothin by 3rd Feb so phoned them to be told it was declined.
The customer service from them is a joke - I have been given the complete run around with the call centre, who refused to take a complaint or put me through to a manager.
To add to this, the form they sent inviting existing customers to apply actually states on it that you are 'guaranteed to be accepted', so it's somewhat misleading! My Credit record is excellent so don't know why I was turned down, the balance was relatively modest (circa £1400).
Been told i can appeal, but if they don't give you a reason for the declinature it's quite difficult to fight your case.0 -

I'm thinking of appealing anyway, and just send them a copy of my letter from the council that I am on the electoral roll. Can't imagine why else I would have been refused. You are right though, they give no reason at all why you have veen declined, just some horses* about not meeting minimum requirements. I called them about this and they had no clue exactly what they meant.
Part of me doesn't want to appeal because I have a feeling that if something goes wrong with the CC it'll be a pain in the !!! to deal with.Total debt at lightbulb moment (Jan 2010): £23410

If you have a guaranteed acceptance letter, you should complain to the FOS that they have failed to meet the terms of that offer. If it's the same letter I originally received - and it probably is - it didn't give them any get-out clauses.
I have - miraculously - now received a "conditional acceptance" letter from them, so it appears to be "game on" for a nice balance transfer. I suppose I should not count my chickens ... it might have a £500 credit limit when they eventually let me know! It is rather silly that card companies - almost without exception - do not inform you of the limit before getting your final agreement to the deal, so you can end up with a new £500 card and a £500 balance transfer when you really wanted £10k.0 -

Totally agree, I want to transfer £4500...no doubt I'll get a crap limit like £500.0 -

Good luck with that MarkyMarkD, hope you get the limit you want. Unfortunately for me it was a verbal "you are guaranteed a Santander Zero card" at an A&L branch so I'm at a loss there probably, although I'll have to go through the paperwork they gave me at the time to see exactly what it says.

If the system shows you are guaranteed then you would have been guaranteed one on that day. The system changes regularly and hence why you may have been guaranteed one day and not the next if that makes any sense! There are only two things a child will share willingly - communicable diseases and their mother's real age0 -

My plan originally had been to wait to apply for a CC until I was on the electoral roll. The "guarantee" made it appealing. I guess I have learned my lesson, and won't believe the banks and their so-called guarantees. I'm umming and arring about appealing (do I really want the hassle of Santander?). I may just wait a number of months to apply for something else.Total debt at lightbulb moment (Jan 2010): £23410

The decline means the computer said no (excuse the pun). Would recommend you appeal it as it is looked at manually and often cards are approved when someone actually looks at them. You've got nothin to loose. There are only two things a child will share willingly - communicable diseases and their mother's real age0 -

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I reckon I will send off the appeal.
