RallyDriver, other companies don't want the part of RM where they would deliver the mail. This is the where they lose more money than make it. The problem is that these companies are allowed to choose which parts of the business they want to take part in. Therefore are taking the money making parts and leaving RM even further out of pocket. But anyhoo, from an insider looking out, if they had less chiefs and more indians (no not a racist term b4 anyone complains) the customer side of things would and could run a lot smoother.

Jomo, I agree with you completely, the customers shouldn't suffer.
But due to poor management and poor scheduling, they do suffer. Again, not the relief postie's fault. I don't see any management here defending the posties.I have brought this up in my own office several times.
If I knew on saturday, I would be covering "Jim's" duty the next week. I could then get the relevant information from Jim. However, we don't know what duty we're on until we get there. So how can we get this information? Ask the management and all they say is "Err, doh, err, I dunno"

Who gets the brunt of this? The posties ofc, who else..

whats the incentive for the companies taking on the obligation?
how do you get over RM already having a network set up over 'new' competitors?

Well, if as lots of people seem to think, RM is massively inefficient. And the private sector can do it with so much more efficiency. Then the market will identify that their is a return to be made from the investement.

TBH I don't see that any company would take it on.

Precisely, and exactly why the route we are going down is wrong. Incidently I did see a programme with a director of TNT mail saying they intend to put orange postmen on the streets of certain major cities in the not too distant future.

By allowing private enterprise to take the profitable bits, you have to accept that they will never take on the unprofitable bits later on, then you will forever need to have public subsidy for the unprofitable bits, probably costing the taxpayer more than if things were just left alone in the first place.

Really its a no win situation for everybody whatever you do.

What they also failed to tell people was that they have set the prices that RM are allowed to charge, making it easier for these other companies like TNT etc to undercut RM. But tbh, this is for another day, doesn't help the OP out.

Hope the advice I have given helps you OP

From a hard working postie :p

BTW I was in the callers office today, had a caller come to collect her parcel stating the postman didn't ring her bell. Guess who the postie was :o

"Oh is that right? That's really strange because you have a bell that sounds like a dog barking when someone rings it? Isn't that right?" says the nice Customer Service Assistant.

"Yes, how do you know that?" asks the customer

"Because, I was the postie who rang your bell yesterday morning. You probably couldn't hear over the sound of your music, but I can assure you that I rang your bell twice and even used my policeman's knock on your door, if you need more evidence, the song that was playing was Cascada - Evacuate the Dancefloor"

Needless to say the customer went rather red, apologised and took her parcel and evacuated the callers office :p
