I noticed stitch witch go on about corsets... has anyone else had a go at making one? I'd love to give it a go but no idea where to start LOL I have a sewing machine and the need... (blooming baby belly!!! grrrr) I'd not have any idea where to start, what material to get etc though
I can`t believe your mentioning corsets !! cos last night i cut out the fabric to make one for a friend.
The pattern i`m using is from a fancy dress pattern that i`ve used before McCall`s 3674. its not as detailed as the one Stitch Witch uses .That one looks more challenging
Will post pic when its done :T0 -
Hi All
Just noticed this thread. I live in Cheshire and would love a go at making my own clothes. Anyone know a good place for patterns and material.
Thanks0 -
Thanks stitching! How long do they normally take you to make? I know the first one or two will take a lot longer but as a general rule (love that one btw!)
The basic corset, like the one in the photo, I can do in eight hours now, but I have had a bit of practice!:D
The pattern I use is based on a Victorian design so very authentic construction methods are used and has a total of 22 bones. The Butterick pattern I mentioned above is a little bit different as it also has a lining. It would probably take twice the number of hours as it's twice the work.
I don't know if you can repair busks or if the only option would be to replace it. It depends on how tightly you want to lace it I suppose. I used to tightlace down to 22" waist, but I'm a bit old for that now!!;)Making magic with fabricLight travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.0 -

LOL Stitching - It probably needs a good heave! I'll have a closer look at the corsets this afternoon and see how easy it would be to take the busks out and replace them
8 hours... not too badIf I manage to complete one for myself I'll make sure I post up pics
I'd love to make corsets but I think I'd probably need a lot of help to be good enough to make one I coudl wear in public if you will
One thing to have something practical to wear under certain dresses and suits for work - another to make fancy ones

My basic corset is a simpler one but can also be adapted to other styles. My current favourite is a cerise and black one I made last year.
I am going on a leather corset course in february and I'm really excited. I have the skins waiting in the sewing room as I bought them in December to beat the VAT increase!!:D
Mrs Tine, feel free to PM me if you want any more info.
I use venacavadesigns as well, they are really helpful!!0 -

Do you guys know where I might be able to find some corset sewing courses? I've been scouring the web for hints and tips and the more I look the more I think that just maybe I'd be just as well to invest in a course LOLDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

I do my courses with Alison Victoria School of Sewing in Ashby de la Zouch. She's not cheap but the courses are over two days and as there are a max of 6 students you get more or less individual help. I don't know where you live, but I travel up from Wiltshire for the courses and have to factor in an overnight B&B room too - but I keep going up for more!!
There are others, and possibly cheaper too but that's how I started, and now have a successful customer base who come back for more so Alison must be teaching me well!Making magic with fabricLight travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.0 -
