How come the post office can migrate the phone line and broadband (for a fee) but orange can't?

Can someone explane how to get my phone line rental off tiscali without being stuck with BT for 12 months?

You wont be 'stuck' with BT for 12 months as such. Transfer back to BT and as soon as your line is (BT) active (about 12 days) you are free to sign up to whoever. Your new ISP simply rents the line off BT on your behalf so you don't have to pay line rental to BT and your new ISP.

It's really stupid I know. Unfortuneatly it means when leaving Tiscali you'll loose BB until your new ISP connects you. Probably 7-10 days or so. Still worth it not to be bullied into a second rate service from Talktalk.

can I just ask... if 40gb not much then? I really don't have any clue about such stuff. We have 2 laptops in the house, both are on pretty much every evening and most of the weekend.

40GB? Its about 80,000 webpages or 200,000 emails sent or received or 1330 songs downloaded or 10 films.

This website gives some rough values that I used to work out the above.

I've just called TalkTalk (via freephone number not the number on the ex-tiscali customer letter). I'm also being offered the £18.49 /month package. They kept insisting on the telephone that this was subject to £29 connection charge - a made a point of saying this is not mentioned at all on the letter and is advertised as "free connection offer extended" on the website. At first I was told they would waiver this but I wouldn't get the first two months half price. It was one or the other! Then they put me through to Tiscali (still free but would have been 5p/min if I'd called direct but they kept listening to my call to Tiscali!!!) to get my MAC code. Thankfully Tiscali had just closed (6pm on Saturdays!) so I just hung up. Seems like the "you won't have to do a thing" letter was a load of rubbish!

If we sign up as new customers online via cashback sites, there is no connection fee but the £18.49/month package looks the same coming as a new customer or as an ex-tiscali customer. Can anyone see a drawback to doing this?

As already mentioned if you have the line rental with Tiscali then you will have to go back to BT first. So you'll be without bb for 2 weeks or so after you get BT to activate the line.

    Don't forget quidco/topcahback if u sign up on-line.

Personaly I'm gonna stick with BT line rental and get bb from BE at £7.50/mth (12 month contract). Works out a few pence dearer but I don't like or trust Talktalk for the next 18 months.
  • I've pretty much decided I want to do the same as cheghead, but my exchange doesn't support any of the good deals, ie BE or plusnet (the entry level price anyway). Still not sure what to do.

well that seems loads to me?

my only other alternative (it seems) is Option 1 with BT, but they only give 10GB.

I can not get any good deals in my area so looks like Virgin for me, £24pm includes line rental and unlimited internet.
Google gives you answers use it.........
  • I've just about given up. Seems I may just have to suffer my 50% price rise with Talk Talk, after all.

What do you think to Virgin?

  • I got my letter today increasing my bill from £9.99 to £14.99, I have been with Tiscali for years and hate the thought of changing. My line rental is with BT.

I have decided to leave Tiscali but can't decide whether to transfer my line rental as well as phone and broadband.

I may go with Plusnet as they seem to have good customer service.
