i'm an orange customer who has yet to be told about this price increase. But I needed to speak to them anyway because they've charged me for free texts again. Last month it was £10 worth, this time it's only £1. Now I've been on hold for five minutes...how hard is it to work out the problem?

Anyway, this itemised billing thing is clearly something that is somewhat of a final straw for lots of you out there. Personally, I've been crying out for the option of not receiving paper bills - it's such a waste of paper for me. As a student with the 1000 free texts my bills are always about 19 pages long.

I've been able to opt out at banks from paper bills for months and months and months. In this day and age any paper that doesn't need to be printed is A Good Thing. So I applaud this. But I'd applaud it even more had it been offered as an option to not have itemised paper billing for free rather than making that choice in opposition to being charged.

Two days ago I'd had nothing but joy and love in my dealings with Orange...today I'm not so sure (I'll post about that in a moment)
  • i agree you should be able to opt out of itemised billing, however to be charged for it is an outrage!

Moreover, at the time I took the contract, itimised billing was the only type of billing available. How can it be an "additional service", when you can't not have it. Surely it was a "everyone has this" service until they re-defined the term.

You can not have itemised billing - you always had the option not to have it, in fact the default is for it not to be applied.

I worked for Orange for three years - each time when connecting a new handset, I was always asked if I wanted itemised billing on the phone. Most people just add it automatically at connection time because it's always been free (except some OVP tariffs where it's already been chargeable for some time).

OK for all you people out there livid at the fact that Orange just decide to increase the Itemised Billing charge from £0 to £1.50 mid way your 12 /18 month contract, this is how to make sure they do not get away with it.

Below is exactly how to do this (tested and works)....

OK, I have sent my letter off quoting the clauses in the contract. I'll post responses up here. BTW I tried calling for a third time and got quoted back to me that their legal department thought they were on solid ground (but they would say that). I said I would love to hear what a judge thought of their clauses in a small claims court. I don't know if I am that pedantic to take it that far (I know I am certainly not rich enough), but we'll see what happens.

Any recommendations for a replacement mobile phone company? Or are they all as bad as each other!?!
The box said "Windows 98 or better". So I got a Mac...

Ref the OVP Virgin EQ. The guy I sit next to at work is on that tarrif, and had his bill with him today. No mention of the 1.50. I'm on the same tarrif and checked my bill when I returned home. Again no mention.

I alsochecked the Virgin website. Itemised is free, so I can't see how they could possibly get away with charging an equivalent tarrif but not charging the same amount!

I said in post #28 that I believe that this and certain other tariffs will not be charged this £1.50 itemised billing fee. I am on this tariff and my statement did mention the charge at the bottom!

Time will tell as they say!

I had the message on the bottom of my June bill. I subsequently contacted Orange CS, they confirmed that I would definitely be charged the £1.50 on EQ Virgin, so I cancelled the itemised billing.

I would be very interested to know how you get on!

This was my point too - I asked Orange about the EQ plan mirroring the Virgin plan, they still insist that I would not receive free itemised billing.

As an Orange contract customer since they began in 1994, I'm not impressed.

I've just found this thread after calling Orange earlier today. Took 20 minutes to get a human, and she was completely inept and unable to counter my arguments other than to maintain that she was right and I was wrong.

I'd be quite happy just to have Orange send me my bill as a PDF attachment to a monthly email. They could even scrap the summary paper statement for me then. But they won't do that. - So much for being concerned about the environment as they claim.

Orange know full well that by requiring customers to take the initiative of going online to check their statement each month, most will forget or find it too much hassle. How many billing mistakes in Orange's favour will now go unnoticed?
