Yeah, but what I was really referring to was; does it know that the drive is 80GB but only 8 is usable? Probably not though when it thinks it is healthy!
That is what the guy told me he said it is cos its cracked and wont recognise that it is 80gb

The model number is a dead giveaway; it's a Western Digital Protege. Though it doesn't appear in this list, you can still determine its capacity by looking at the model codes for the others.

If it were 80GB, its model code would be WD800EB instead of WD80EB.

Report this idiot to trading standards, and ask for a full refund. There is no such thing as a "cracked" drive that can only see part of it's capacity. A hard drive either works or not. There is not in-between.

Find a local sixth former or knowledgeable neighbour to go with you and give you the support you need.

Straight from the Western Digital website:
    http://www.wdc.com/en/library/2579-001028.pdf

the capacity code for drives up to 1 TB are two three or four digits up to 999.9 Gig. There is a decmal place (which they only moved for drives over 1TB).

So according to the people who made the drive its an 8.0 GB drive code, I tend to believe them over this cowboy in the shop

Is it possible that the reference to 'cracked' could have been in reference to the windows installation?
ie 'its a cracked copy of windows that can't see your full hard drive'

Still a load of old rubbish of course and doesn't explain what happened to the original hard drive!

Whilst the 'dropped' comment refers to the loose component .... fan?

    Nothing sounds right here though.

No he said my fan proves it has been dropped as it was loose and in that drop I must have cracked my hard drive, but I never dropped it as it went from my car to my computer desk where it sat without being moved

Any reputable computer repairer should offer to return all the faulty parts to you that they have replaced. They belong to you, and they have no right to keep them. They should also give you a written description of the work done.

As for the hard drive, the information label on the drive should give all the information to prove the size. Is he saying he has swapped the drive somewhere along the way, or is he saying it's still your original.
