Jasx, i was only answering some questions, hence repeating what the guy in the shop said. I do not for one minute believe him.
I am very grateful for the advice that everyone on this thread has given me as it helped me to understand what the computer is all about, and what to say to the guy in the shop.
I am not letting this drop as I have asked for print out of what was done to my computer which I hope to get tomorrow to see what is what.I am determined to lose weight!:kisses3:

He's at it.
Contact trading standards. That 8GB hard drive wasn't fitted in the factory and it didn't get there by itself. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.

As I mentioned earlier, and by Fifer above, contact Trading Standards.
1. There is, I repeat, with tens of years in the IT industry, no such thing as a "cracked" i.e. broken/shattered hard drive which will still work but show only a part of its capacity.
A HD will either work or not work based on physical damage. If one platter is physically damaged, it won't function at all, it certainly won't report half capacity is usable. They just don't work like this. It would spin up, the heads would crash into the surface and it'd be dead in less than a second.
Data errors running an HD scan, are very different, but this is nothing to do with the issue you are having.
2. The code/model from the HD indicated it is a 8GB drive, not a larger drive only showing a smaller capacity, again as Fifer says, "it didn't get there by itself".0 -
Thanks for your replies...
Is there any way I can look at the hard drive to see what it is? I think I know how to take the side off the tower to have a lookI am determined to lose weight!:kisses3:

It'll have a big sticker on it, that'll confirm at the very least the model number, should have capacity in GB but not all do.0 -
While I'm at it just to cover ourselves, is it possible the drive was original and only 8GB all along but OP had an unpatched version of XP? if OS was alot smaller she might have had all her extra programs on the existing drive and we're chasing wild geeese? small chance but might need discounting.....
Small chance i know, and doesn;t excuse the chap in the shop being useless and devious on the other counts/hardware downgrades...
what on earth could he be getting for £85 from microsoft?0 -

I think the PC is a Compaq and someone earlier determined that the HD model number indicated that it orginated in a games console. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
