On thing that is confusing me here. I understand that you originally thought the hard drive had been replaced, and the shop says it hasn't. But your original post says that you had less programs than before - so has XP been reinstalled clean on your PC, and if so by who - I take it the shop is denying this, although it would not be an unreasonable thing to do with a motherboard replacement (of a different type). It would have to be done though if the hard drive was swapped.
It doesn't seem to be on the invoice. Really does sound like he is making this up as he goes.

I think the PC is a Compaq and someone earlier determined that the HD model number indicated that it orginated in a games console.

Could have, but that Western Digital drive would not have been exclusivly for the XBox, would be useful to learn a bit more about when /where the original PC came from, did it have a model number, if the OP has any original paperwork or if CompaQ were using 8GB WD drives in their machines back then....

Have you contacted Trading standards yet?. If you have a mp3 player with microphone or dictaphone take it with you and record him telling you the biggest load of porkes,

Like other posters have said, a cracked Harddrive would fail to work at all.

    AM2+ £42.25
Talking of porkies, here's another one. The AM2+ socket is exclusively for AMD processors, whereas the report produced by Belarc Advisor clearly indicates that the processor you have now was manufactured by Intel.

This specific marque of processor doesn't even go in a socket - instead, the electrical contacts rest on a bed of pins.

Contact them first before you do more, you already have seriously conflicting paperwork to original specifications and what windows says you have. Thats enough to tell Trading standards. Hes clearly ripped you off with lower specification parts, not the same Processor/ motherboard as he invoiced you for.

no not yet as I am in the middle of making crafts for Christmas using this computer to do it... and scared to take it apart to see what the drive number is. I was going to ask a friend if her b/f knows anything about computers and if he can take a look for me
