Any reputable computer repairer should offer to return all the faulty parts to you that they have replaced. They belong to you, and they have no right to keep them. They should also give you a written description of the work done.
As for the hard drive, the information label on the drive should give all the information to prove the size. Is he saying he has swapped the drive somewhere along the way, or is he saying it's still your original.
he is saying he never touched my hard drive and it is cracked which is why it is showing up 8GBI am determined to lose weight!:kisses3:
Weight loss so far 2 stones 6lbs!! :j:j0 -
If the label on the top is anything like this one the capacity may not be explicitly stated. It is not however necessary to know the capacity; the drive is most certainly not what you had when you bought the PC.All the Western Digital drives I have seen show the size in either Mb or Gb like this which shows 8455.2MB (around 8GB)
Should reading the label prove too difficult, you can obtain at least some of the information printed on it with the help of this utility, which can also be used to determine the condition of the drive.0 -

Fair enough, your picture is probably closer to what the OP has been dumped with.0 -

You mean, he didn't fit the fan right so he could tell you that you dropped it? And hence swindle you out of some more cash?Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
Has there ever been an 8gb HD and if so how long ago? Another thought occurs. I have a Dell which was supplied with a sizeable HD. When I actually checked it out on arrival, to summarise, the HD storage seemed to have been loaded in two "slugs" - made up of a very large slug and a much smaller minor slug, to bring up the capacity to that claimed. I think the second slug was about 12gb. Maybe the poster has had a similar set up and the original major slug has died leaving only the minor one active. Still doesn't explain what the repair shop is up to.0

What you would have got was 1 drive, but divided up into 2 partitions. The main partition, which is the huge bit and the recovery partition, which you use if it all goes tits up. But it's still only one drive which is in your computer.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -

Urgh, we've told her about 15 times this is complete technical nonsense and even provided links to the manufacurers site specifically contradictng what the guy in the shop has said.
I'm startng to think we're making no impact at all and for some reason OP is determined to believe said nonsense the guy in the shop has told her and disregard completly what we're collectively tryng to get across.
I think I'm giving up. Irishgirl as this guy seems to have identified problems with your PC historically unknown to the rest of the professonal IT community at large and who visit this board, and you're set on ignoring our view of whats much more likely to be wrong. I'm struggling to see how to be of more help
Maybe he can fix your "cracked & dropped hard disk" with a packet of magic pixie dust Microsoft are going to send him and you can tell us that thats what the problem was all along because he said so.
Apologies but -> /sign off0 -
To be fair IrishGirl is really only confirming to us what was said. She's needed to repeat it to answer peoples points.
I get the feeling that her instincts tell her something was not right and indeed this thread seems to confirm this.
I get the impression that she accepts she needs to challenge the shop but understandably isn't very confident about how to do it/what to say.
It'll be interesting to hear what happens on Monday so I hope she keeps us posted!0 -
There's somethings I don't understand.
The repair shop says it didn't replace the hard drive - so does it have the original hard drive? If it does, does that make any sense considering the age of the PC? I'd guess the answer is no. And that doesn't make sense if some programs have disappeared. If that's the case the shop must have done something to the old hard drive.
If there was a new processor, and the Celeron would a slight upgrade on the Athlon, if that's what it had, the shop must have changed the motherboard (as Tanglefoot mentioned) as well but that's not mentioned in the work done. The label is suggesting an Athlon so it appears the motherboard must have been replaced.
What is also clear is that the shop said the fan was loose. So that's why it kept shutting down, probably, as it would have been overheating. Refix or replace the fan and it's fixed unless the motherboard clip was dodgy.
A processor and RAM upgrade would have been a good idea but would be optional, the RAM would have been highly recommended. I'm not convinced the chosen processor and assumed motherboard upgrade was necessary especially at that price.0
