    Hi Shelley

As Mooncups are non-absorbent, they are fine to use on the light run up and they are equally good for the very heavy days too. If you are exceptionally heavy, then it maybe a good precaution to back it up with a towel at night though. It's a step worth taking and I'd say go for the A cup as it's a little bigger and as you say you are in your 30s now, so you might as well.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.

Do you have to rinse them out every time you empty them or if you are out for the day and can't use a sink is putting it back once empty ok to do but give it a good clean when you get home?
Do you just clean it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush?

Also how to sterilise it at end and beginning of next cycle. I don't fancy boiling it on my cooker neither do I fancy putting it in the dishwasher.

thanks for the advice and sorry to be a pain in the butt :o

I am a few days away from using my new Moocup for the first time...only rehearsed once, almost gave up, but persevered...I will use it only to sleep and be at home to begin with...if then works, I will continue ...I have use tampons since I was 13 (and towels at night) and I am finding them increasingly uncomfortable, not to mention they dry me out a bit... any tips for a newbie like me??

I love my mooncup but it's not something I could use if I worked in an office IYSWIM.

    Tips for a beginner

Cut stem off makes much more comfy

Put loo paper in loo before emptying stops you leaving any residue.

Wet wipes in handbag can be useful

They are great had problems with heavy flow with tampons etc mooncup so much better can swim etc and wonderful travelling abroad as don't have to try to find shops that stock tampons etc

Or a mirena coil, most people stop having periods with that too after the first couple of months. It is also the most reliable form of reversible contraception, lasts five years and is reversed immediately when it is removed so you don't have to wait for the effects to wear off. It is suitable for lots of people who have side effects with other hormonal methods too as the hormone levels are lower!

    Can you tell I'm a convert! :D

Depo provera has a similar effect too.

I've had a Mirena coil for the last year and it hasn't stopped mine (unfortunately), though it has lessened them, which after three pgs is what I wanted as it was getting a bit Hammer House of Horror once a month (and also extremely painful!). I do use a mooncup and think they're fab. The first couple of times is a bit wierd and scarey but then so were tampons at first! It's just what you're used to.

I bought mine in Boots on special offer, which they do reasonably regularly, you just need to keep an eye out for them. If you've an Advantage card as well you're laughing!

i have quite a heavy flow, and can say that i dont even need to empty it, on a 9-5 shift. With tampons, i found they always wicked down the string, and i was forever nipping to the loo to check for leaks

For me, it was the drying out effect that i got from tampons (alot of people think this is the main culprit of period pain) that made me try the mooncup, but with the mooncup my period pains have totally gone, so perhaps theres some truth in it

Have been using the mooncup for about 8yrs now, and i can count the number of times ive had a leak on one hand, and thats usually because ive forgotten im wearing it, and have gone a whole day without emptying (its that comfortable and un-noticeable)

I know they say to have trial run inserting it before your period, but honestly, i find youre just a bit too dry to wear it other than when you have your period

As said above, its best to put a wodge of paper down the loo and then empty the cup onto it (unless theres a loo brush handy) as it does tend to to sit in the bowl and not flush away, otherwise. i even do this at home, as ive lost count of the number of times, dd has asked me if ive been eating beetroot!

For out and about changes, you either just have to accept you cant give it a quick rinse before re-inserting, or take a small spray bottle of water with you can give it a going over, and also baby wipes are handy. its not so much for cleaning the mooncup, more for the walk of shame to the sink, with messy fingers (some if tmi) - but then again, anyone who uses non-applicator tampons must have the same problem?

Honestly id never go back to tampons. In fact im loathe to buy a new one, even though im approaching the 10yr lifespan as im that attached to my current one

  • Thank you for the tips! I think it will be a success...(only a day or two away now!).
I was in India in December and oh, boy, no tampons anywhere in the city I spent the first week in...when I passed a chemist that had a very small box of OB tampons in the window I rushed in to buy it... it was THE only box! I wanted two boxes, just in case and the guy, poor thing, run to the other shop they had round the corner: he was not really understanding what I was asking for , but his wife did and told to go straight away...boy, luxury item, most expensive tampons I have ever bought!!

The story of the blocked toilet back at the hotel I will keep for myself...:eek:mooncup all the way from now on!:D

I saw them heavily reduced in my local boots in Wood Green London this week, I think they were under a tenner IIRC.

    Hi.

I have posted on the epic mooncup thread but not had a reply to my query as yet so thought I'd ask you ladies on this one.

Do you have to rinse them out every time you empty them or if you are out for the day and can't use a sink is putting it back once empty ok to do but give it a good clean when you get home? (I'm thinking worst case scenario, I have gone out and not taken any wet wipes with me to wipe it)
Do you just clean it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush in between empties?

Also how to sterilise it at end and beginning of next cycle. I don't fancy boiling it on my cooker neither do I fancy putting it in the dishwasher.
    Can I use sterilising fluid/tablets?

    Thanks
