    My ex did the same thing to me. Note the word EX. It's disrespectful, inconsiderate and deceitful behaviour, and distance means nothing.

    so - ask him whats going on? as you have seen some emails that led you to investigate further - and its upsetting you. seems to me you are feeling like the guilty one. dont - but its up to you to ask him to explain them.
