3 is the cheapest, but is it best

What do you mean by 'proper satnav'? Nokia Maps comes on the E71 with voice guidance for three months. There is a free satnav program about but I can't remember the name just now. I didn't rate it at all though.
Ah, ok. Well I suppose I won't need it anyway as I'd only use it on foot anyway. I doubt I'll use it much at all to be honest.
It seems a great idea but thinking about it, I really don't see me using it unless I'm day tripping in London.0 -
So, does anyone know what software I need to get 'proper' SatNav on the E71?
There are a number of options:
The built in Nokia maps is acceptable but the interface can be frustrating compared to the best in class. Get Nokia map loader from their website if you don't have a data plan (it allows you to download the map onto an sd card rather than stream it via the web as you drive). Nokia maps is sold as a subscription service so can be either cheaper or more expensive than a traditionally bought sat nav package.
Google mobile maps is free but doesn't provide turn by turn navigation and needs a constant data connection to work. Fine for on foot navigation or route planning before a car journey.
There used to be a version of tomtom for symbian phones, but it's disappeared from their website and anyways didn't support the internal gps chip without dodgy hacks.
Garmin sell a good mobile gps package for symbian: Garmin mobile XT.
Some of the less well known options are Navigon, NDrive and Route 66 though I've no experience of their products.
Turn by turn car navigation software can be a big drain on the battery. Get a car charger and a dashboard or windscreen mount for your phone.0 -
Cheers for the info Bob.
I wouldn't use it in car as I have a TomTom already. I will definitely find it useful when out and about though, particularly when in London. My sense of direction is awful!0 -
I've got the phone. Been playing with it for a while. Installed Google Maps, YouTube and some other bits. What an absolutely amazing piece of technology! Even the browser is bearable for viewing and navigating websites.
This is going to keep me busy for weeks working out what I can do with it.
The screen is much better than I ever imagined it would be too.0 -

I've felt like that ever since I've had my Touch and that's over 18 months now. Tip for browsing - if you want to zoom on a particular element then instead of pinch opening just double tap it almost always gets it right.
BTW as the OS is a version of OS X you might want to try a Mac0 -
i had been with 3 for 18 months on contract and had an LG phone which i loved and to be honest i was more than happy with 3, the coverage was great and i got 1000 texts and 200 minutes for only £15.
HOWEVER......when my contract was due to end i got a call from a member of the 3 team offering me an upgrade etc and i told him i wasnt sure if i wanted to stay with them, when he heard this he offered me the chance to stay with the £15 deal and also said i could have one of those really expensive nokia phones with sat nav. i said as long as i can keep my current deal im happy to keep my old phone but he said the new phone is free so take it so i did.
everything was fine for about 2 months until one day my bill arrived and they charged me £40, what a shock. i phoned them and they said they were rising my contract fee as i had accepted a new phone and i said i couldnt afford to pay that a month, i was told i had to afford it or else they would send the balifs to my house!!!! i was soooo upset. after a week of phone calls to them i then contacted other agencies for help and eventually 3 said they would drop the bill to £19 a month. if i could i would end the contract with then in a split second. i will NEVER sign up with them again for pulling that stunt on me. the most annoying thing is i never signed anything for the new contract just accepted a phone that was pushed on to me.0 -

The BBC iPlayer app is brilliant too.
Now I've got over the excitement of it all, the case it comes with is rubbish and the large headphone jack is a pain in the !!!! as I now have to buy a converter.0
