"Skype for 3" works fine on an standard (i.e unbranded) E71. You just need to go to the skype page on Planet3 and download it.

For the correct settings just call customer services on 333 and choose the option for technical support. Tell them you've messed up the connection settings on your phone and they'll send them to you again via sms. Planet 3 is just a mobile web page so once you have the correct access point settings go to "mobile.3.co.uk" in the phone web browser to access it.

For the 3 version of MSN you need a 3 branded phone as the app won't install without a 3 certificate that isn't present in the unbranded firmware. You could instead use the nokia windows messenger version but I think you would be charged extra for data used by that program whilst data used by the 3 version is included in mix and match price plans.

so the only different is that with an unbranded e71 i might not be able to use msn messenger. is there anything else i won't be able to use?
thank you very much for your help

There are a few other apps 3 promote - orb (for streaming video and/or audio from your home pc), slingplayer (for streaming video from your home sky or freeview box), mobilcast (for streaming podcasts), yahoo go (for yahoo messenging and email) etc, but I haven't used any of them on an unbranded S60 phone so don't know whether they'll work.

Don't worry about it too much - as far as I know 3 don't block any standard "non-3" apps from working on their network, though if you plan to use a lot of net connected apps I'd recommend getting the £5/month "Internet Max" (1GB fair use) add-on.

This may be a little radical, but I'd recommend a different provider. 3 have lots of great deals, but their coverage is abysmal. I use Vodafone and have never had problems with signal. I now have a cell phone contract, and a mobile internet contract, together (with a Blackberry) costing under £50 a month (!!!). Stick with one company known for being good, and build up a good in house rep, you'll get the best phones and deals after a couple of years, and that lasts a lifetime!

Thank you for speaking on behalf of the nation. Just because you don't have good coverage where you live doesn't mean the whole country is like that. Vodafone provides me with the worst signal both at home and work.

I don't think having a contract phone and mobile broadband costing under £50 a month is anything to brag about to be honest unless you have literally thousands of inclusive minutes and texts.

i've just recently cancelled all of our vodafone mobile contracts at work because we often lose signal for a whole day every month. This has been happening for two years with no resolution from vodafone. Other than that they worked well though did charge me £25 for every PAC code when i left.

We now use Orange at work which ive found to be very good.

At home is use 3, i find the signal to be pretty good to be honest, one or two dead spot. My tip would be going with a solid, reputable phone. (N95 8 gig, E71 - both well reviewed and dependable). That way you get very cheep prices and dont have to deal with CS. I also avoid upgrading through carphone warehouse or phones4u.

I got "Network Busy" for hours each day over a 1 year contract.

    Hi All,

I think 3 has the best calling charges...on their mix 'n' match price plans they just charge 12p per minute....whereas the other networks charge around 25p per min....

    regards.

Its probably just struggling to get a connection. My SE has connected but it took over 5 mins to do it and many times it just wouldn't.
