Just like some other industries that were "regulated" for the better? No thanks. I'm quite happy with all the free contracts I've had and quite prepared to take my chances. Once the great finger of the state gets too involved it is often for the worse.

In some ways I agree, I don't like regulation, but even Trading Standards want to see things tightened up when things like this happen:
"Birmingham Trading Standards is so concerned about the spread of the controversial cash back deals that it is demanding action at a national level..."
I too have had 3 successful cashback claims in a 2 year period, and I agree, it's hard luck on the people that don't follow the rules. However I think the companies that do this should not be able to simply give PO box addresses and do runners. Maybe have something like this, quite simple:
    1. Company offering cashback must give a REAL address.
    2. % of money must be ringfenced, or underwritten by Network provider
There is plenty of money in the mobile phone industry, so I don't think this would overburden them.

As far as real addresses go, they are breaking the distance selling regulations by not providing one.

so on that basis do people think it would be wise to cancel now or have some had success in getting their cashback? The deal does seem too good to be true....

I took a contract with the sister company PBD just over a month ago now, i did so as I had no problems with my current contract(just too slow), but now im highly regretting it due to this new 'scam' which has emerged and a change of the t&c, which suggests the company is desperate for people to make mistakes. Least I got 30£ quidco, but im still in a defecit of over £390+. I'm just hoping these people do not go bust.

Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.

Joanne Slater is a Director, so is Simon Slater. The address for the job ad is probably an office address and may not be associated directly with the company. In fact a quick Google Search shows that 18 Market Place is probably an accommodation address or a very small serviced office, it is used by the British Canoe Association and several other businesses and clubs, so anyone who goes there with a phone bill and claim form will probably be greeted with no more than a puzzled look.

However, the PO Box address where the cashback claims go to is at Clarke Road Nottingham, and it looks like an industrial unit. Check this out with the Royal Mail's address finder, just put in postcode NG13 8XT. You can see it in Google maps, if you zoom in using satellite or hybrid view you will see a building with lots of red vans. It could be a Royal Mail depot....

It is a Royal Mail Depot...
    NOTTINGHAM SOUTH DELIVERY OFFICE
    11 CLARKE ROAD
    NOTTINGHAM NG2 3EE

Therefore, it is extremely probable that they are collecting the mail from the RM depot. Remember the T&Cs say your claim must be delivered to the PO Box address. If anyone does want to hand the claim in, I would say get agreement in writing first, and an address. However, I think such a request will be met with a refusal.

I believe Royal mail will provide a fixed address from a PO Box. I will ring them tomorrow and ask. Watch this space...

NG13 is the postcode for Bingham, a small town between Nottingham and Grantham. You will find that the postcode for PO Box 8895 Bingham Nottingham NG13 8XA and 18 Market Place Bingham Nottingham NG13 8AP are extremely similar. Chances are the PO Box points to the same address.

Maybe anyone lives near this area could go to 18 Market Place in Bingham to check it out?

I hope the "guys" you are referring to are none of the dozen people who have had CNM claim that they have not sent in the right pages of the bills!
Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.
  • Just an update from me -

I've had a cash back contract with CNM for the past year and recieved my final cheque a couple of days ago. Handwritten again, but it means I have recieved all my money back + Quidco and my old phone is on eBay as I type this.

Thought it would be useful to hear another experience. CNM have been slow, but reliable, and I've never had any problems with things not being delivered or missing pages. Perhaps I've been lucky.

Good luck to all of you that are in dispute with CNM.

Crikey, handwritten? All my CPW and earlier mobileshop ones ones were mass printed. The cheque writer is surely in danger of getting carpel tunnel syndrome with all the cheques they have to write! Got a cheque number? We can compare it with payouts in one month or two months time.
  • I am expecting my second cheque any day - the first one was a couple of weeks late but I have come to expect that from these cashback schemes. I used mobileshop last year and had the same issues, but everything was paid in the end, even if I did have to chase it. No, chasing shouldn't be necessary, but as others have said, it's essentially a free phone, free calls and texts. Not a bad deal in exchange for a bit of record-keeping and a few strongly-worded emails! :)
    Have I said something useful?

Well, I've wimped out. Managed to get through today and have been given a return code. I phoned another number to double check there would be no extra costs with cancelling and they mentioned a £7.50 re-stock fee. When I questioned where this was written in their T&C they said it isn't and that it isn't in the contract either. I asked how they could charge customers this when they don't tell them about it in the T&C - she quickly said once I'm charged if I phone back, they will refund the money. Yeah right! If it's that simple, why charge me in the firstplace??! Glad I've got out now whilst I can :o
