Does this only apply to those that got a contract directly with Orange or does it include mobiles bought from other places (phones4u) that are on the Orange network?

You need to check the T&C's of the supplier.

Buymobilephones.net have separate T&C's that you agreed to as well as oranges.

    The Buymobilephones.net T&C's are here

    http://www.buymobilephones.net/info_terms.php?id=12

    and they state;

14.1.1. In the event that you are disconnected from your network for any reason within the period of 120 days from your initial billing date, we will invoice you the minimum sum of 200 plus VAT per handset. The charge will be dependant on the tariff selected at the time of disconnection.

So you may get an additional charge from them direct.

They get commission off of the networks to get new subscribers, when they get this commission I don't know.
If they don't get the commission because you cancelled early then they may try come after you for some cash. Hope they don't but just wanted to point out that if you didn't buy direct from Orange then there may be another set of T&C's to worry about.

Thing is you can't trust them. I cancelled my contract on Saturday and they said it would be terminated in 30 days. I phoned today to make sure it was still going ahead and they knew nothing of it!

oh i guess ill have to hope for the best .
i know when i got the phone that it got declined as a new contract and had to apply for the phone as a second handset so maybe that will keep them at bay.
    ill keep my fingers crossed

OK....well I called them tonight and requested to cancel my contract. He asked why and I said 'due to the increase in call charges'. He asked if I had the text and I said 'yes' (I have not). He gave me 2 options:

    1.Cancel my contract
2.Put me on a different plan

Of course I went for 1! He said I have given 30 days notice and a PAC code will be sent out in the post. No further charges will be made after the 30 days if the PAC is used between now and then.

He did not really look into my account. He said my bills should be about £18.00 a month and I said no they are about £30 to which he then looked at the average and agreed - he then said 'oh well it looks like you might be affected by this'....(I don't think I have ever gone over my minutes though but I kept that quiet!)

He did try and change my mind and was not overly friendly. He gave me his 1st name only and he said my reference number was my mobile. Should I assume all is OK and just wait for the PAC code?

Also when should I look into a new phone? Is it wise to wait until close to the 30 days or should I do this as soon as I receive the PAC?

    Cheers

p.s. all went through quite smoothly so if you are in 2 minds...go for it:beer:
