Yeah Deemy and his endless sparring with MTC.

Now at the distance of four years. it all seems a lot of hassle for nothing. Some of those who were reviled now appear not so bad after all.

I can't decide if this post is aimed at Magyar, or Martin. Granted, it took me a while to understand it. I'm thinking Magyar?

I think its aimed at bogof the person who posted just a few posts above.

Bickering in these threads does exist and does generate work, but most are sorted out on the thread. The people who get upset if they are losing the argument and report a post/poster will still do so regardless of thanks/post count. In fact they might even think they have more chance of getting a regular banned if they show an artificially lower post count, so it could in fact generate even more work. Trouble makers and bad losers exist and manipulating post counts will not address this problem.

Totally agree. I've taken part in some pretty heavy debates in dt in my time on this site. 98% of the time we're civil with one another even if we think what they say is rubbish. I might disagree 100% with a poster in one thread and think they're being an idiot yet on another thread will be clicking the thanks button as I agree with them 100%.

I'm sure that in 99% of cases of reported abuse from DT, it's purely malicious reporting. Someone starts a thread, or comments on a thread, or agrees with the OP. Someone else comes along and politely spells out the flaw in the OPs point of view or plays devils advocate (again while being polite).

The OP (or the person agreeing with their POV) can't handle another viewpoint that shows a different opinion, they can't come back with a valid argument so instead find something to report the thread for.

Most people are mature enough to have sensible debates and take criticism with a pinch of salt. We shouldn't really be penalised for those few that take offense at everything (usually on behalf of someone else who doesn't care anyway)

Being new shouldn't mean you are treated any differently from being on here for 3 years. If you say something silly, chances are you will have it pointed out. As others have said, you could have 100000 posts in DT but be posting your first post in say "Credit Cards". A simple look at the post count can show anyone whether someone is new or not without having to make their first 3 posts stand out.

While I agree with the cliff analogy earlier in this thread it's still a fact that there are a lot of people that don't have the first clue with regards to handling money and while many come on this site for genuine help, there are still many who come on here seeking out info to rip off the system

eg, 1st post saying they have run up £15k on 4 credit cards and have just found out it may be possible for the agreements to be deemed unenforceable, how to they go about trying. Then they wonder why people respond with words along the lines of "you borrowed it, you spent it, you should pay it back".

I agree there's more polite ways of saying it but unless people take responsibility for their debts, they will NEVER be debt free. All the time they blame banks etc for lending them the money (and I agree the banks are PARTLY to blame), but refuse to accept any responsibility themselves, any advice given on how to solve their immediate debt crisis will probably do more harm than good. They will probably hang around just long enough to learn how to get their interest frozen and min payment plan set up, then we wont see them again to politely try to get them to realise the errors of their ways. Meanwhile in 10 years time they will find themselves in exactly the same position.

I dealt with my debt problems before finding this site, but it wasn't until a good friend of mine had a really heated argument with me and made me realise that at the end of the day I could have said no, but I chose to spend it, that I realised I had the responsibility for my debt. Once I realised that, sorting them out became very easy.

If people come onto a money saving site wanting help with their debts, while we should all be polite, we should also be able to tell the truth without wondering if we're going to get a yellow card. I've learnt 1000000 times more off the few people I've met in my life who say things as they are, than the many hundreds of people I've met that have tried to be as nice as pie.

If this site is simply here to tell people what they want to hear , justify their actions etc then it won't be much help to them at all.

I think this is a really good idea. I've been a victim of something similar, and would have welcomed the ability to prevent the person from 'following' me around the forum. Some posters, especially 'newbies' also inadvertently give away a lot of personal information, and this would enable them to protect themselves from people who have caused problems for them.

It would need to be fairly discreet though, something like 'this person's profile is private', and newbies would have to have the 'view profile' privilege disabled, to prevent the 'follower' from simply registering under an AE and accessing the profile through that.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I have nothing to hide although I am relatively discreet; I don't even come up in search on Facebook and I don't display my contact details here. I don't mind everyone seeing my profile. I just want to block one user, and then have the option of blocking others if/as I see fit, if this makes sense.;)
