• Stuart, I just wanted to thank you once more for this tip. My old 12gb allowance will run out soon, so I have started using my new 24gb kit on my big laptop. I found that the flat, old-fashioned dongle does not work, so I put the SIM into my modern USB dongle. I have checked the allowance online, to confirm that they have sent what I was expecting.

It feels really good to be set up with mobile broadband for two years, and all for £118.24!

• I just wanted to announce that the old-fashioned dongle does work, I must have done something wrong!

The dongle+SIM work with both Windows and LINUX, and switch between 3g and 3 HSDPA. It cannot slot directly into the USB port, but that is good as using the short cable helps to keep it cool.

This is a great deal, for someone with my requirements.

PS There are 2 cables in the kit: the one I am not using has 2 USB connections and one for the dongle. Any ideas what it is for?

To give more power from PC to the dongle.
When I had the dongle it was needed to boot-up installation program.
And apparently when the signal was weaker.

To cut a long story short: I signed up for a 18 month contract with 3 Mobile Broadband which gives me 5GB monthly usage, "upto" - emphasis on "upto" 3.2MB speed for £15 a month.

I thought this would be ideal as didn't wanna fork out for a BT line as my housemate also has mobile broadband with Tmobile.

Had numerous problems such as connectivity, poor reliability, slow speed, poor customer service etc etc.

It has got to the point where I complained to their executive office (top complaints people based in the UK and NOT India) which led to nothing and now I am currently dealing with OTELO - the ombudsmen.

They are currently investigating the matter and I am hoping they will enable me to cancel this crappy contract.

After couple of bits of information really:
• If anyone has or has not had 3 mobile or an other mobile broadband provider previously and they have contacted OTELO, then how have they faired?
• Hopefully, if they get 3 Mobile to cancel my contract then I am looking into getting a BT line and getting either broadband with them or opting to get Sky TV along with their phone line and broadband deal. Which would people recommend to get?
Your advice is much appreciated!

can't help with the OTELO question, however if you can get it, I would strongly recommend having a look at O2 home broadband. Especially if you have an O2 phone.

would you say their reliability/connectivity is good?

have you only spoke to their technical support team?

try contacting: Executive.Office@three.co.uk or 0870 733 0295

this is their complaints team who are based in scotland - I would try getting in touch with them to get a result.

their customer services and technical support teams are based in india and it is like trying 2 draw teeth out talking to them!

we took out an 18 month contract with 3 in september last year and signed up for their 7.50 a month with international roaming with no extra charges. as my hubby works in italy occasionally this was perfect for us. he has used it in italy for approx 5 weeks since we took the contract out with no problems at all and still 7.50 a month. he gets out to italy today manages to connect downloads 11 e mails and it goes off and wont reconnect. phoned 3 and they have stopped the international unless we pay full whack. they told him the 11 e mails he downloaded had cost £11.00. we had no notification from them they were stopping this and although they have re imbursed the £11 we are stuck. he is supposed to be working out there and now has no internet access. i just wanted to warn others to be careful if they took out this contract. this was the only reason we went with them because we needed international on occasions and now we are tied into a contract, i cant believe they can get away with this but i suppose they will and rip lots of people off in the process
