    Hi,
Just to let everyone know that it arrived today, so if you order one be prepared to wait two weeks for delivery.
As I only want this dongle for occasional use I'll have to see if there is any way around the 30 day rule on top ups.

    Cheers

It's worth reading the thread titled "Unlock your ZTE 627 Mobile Broadband Dongle (the free one from MicroP) for FREE!" you'll find information there about how you can get around the 30 day rule by using a PAYG sim. I've not tried it myself, but I've just ordered a free PAYG sim off Three's web site and will try giving it a go.
  • Hoobloodyray, paid at last for it, since I've found that people have unlocked for it I figured £5 well spent IMO. Just hope it arrives. :)

The answer is yes and no, depending on how old your SIM card is - it seems.

Some older SIM cards do roam onto the GPRS network and let you use data, but it seems that a lot of newer ones don't.

My experience with a 9-month old USB Modem starter kit SIM is that it will, but only if your access point name is "3internet" rather than "three.co.uk".

The former one may take a few tries to connect in a GPRS area but does work once connected. The latter connects first time in a GPRS area but only loads pages on the three.co.uk domain.

    Good luck!

Mine did not work on GPRS, only on 3.

But now its unlocked with an orange SIM it does!
  • Can I use the "free" 3 dongle with its PAYG sim in Italy without paying a fortune?

In a word, no. Roaming charges on mobile broadband are massive. The 3 site will tell you the rate per MB they will charge you.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

No, but you could unlock it and see if you could get a 3G Italian sim, which might do the trick. Would involve some research, but there will be someone on this forum who could advise.

I am in Italy now and am using my 3 payg dongle with the 'Like at Home' facility. I topped up with £15 for 3gb, (more than adequate). I am in a small village 80 miles south of Rome and speed is OK (I am getting hsdpa connection)

Unfortunately the 'Like at Home' facility is being withdrawn by 3 at the end of this month. So when I return here I will need to investigate alternatives.
