I think its down to the treatment of customers by a percentage of staff, I am pretty sure if staff say that to each and every customer that dares complain, you would be in for a very short job, or at best a very empty store.

I would be happy to shop elsewhere, the local fruit n veg shop, newsagents and local butchers, the trouble is, they pulled all those down to make way for one of these huge superstores known more commonly as "Tesco", a lot of people are stuck with em, whether they like it or not.

But I am sure if everyone who didnt like the treatment they got from Tesco staff, with the same attitude of "theres the door if you dont like it" as you have portrayed on this forum. The management might just be a tiny bit conserned about the lack of trade.

I find in our local store of Tesco a large 40% of the staff treat a massive 90% of their customers with such disrespect. True I can shop elsewhere from Asda, Netto, Iceland, Lidl saving myself a fortune, and reducing the ratio of rude staff a good 50%. But not a lot of people are able to do that, be it lack of transport to being too old to make that journey across town.

Every customer deserves to be treated with courtesy and a smile, no matter what kind of bad day the staff member has had (its part n parcel of the job), its no different to me saying, if you dont like the way customers shop, dont work there!.
exactly mate, where i live at the moment the largest store in the town is tesco, and for most people if they want to shop at asda (or anywhere else) they either have to drive about 4 miles, or shop somewhere a fraction of the size or pay about another 5 pounds in a taxi each way as the buses are one an hour.

luckily in 4 weeks i am moving and 15 minutes in the car gives me the choice of asda, morrisons, aldi, netto or tesco.

i know working in a supermarket is a grim job, but the majority of supermarket staff see someone like me as a breath of fresh air, someone friendly that *shock* talks to the checkout operator rather than throwing another stores bags for life at them and demanding to have their bags packed. and yes i left retail 3 years ago this summer from a decent supervisory position so i know who most of the people are in one of my local asdas, and i still get approached by customers that recognise me (and they still ask where things are :rotfl:)

where i live at the moment tesco in the town centre obliterated the local shops we had, we have a tesco express here and a tesco in the town centre, no-one else stands a chance, where i am moving to tesco wont touch, they wanted to build a store, asda got there first and now they dont deem the town viable, ha ha good, cos asda and morrisons are making a fortune out of the 4 mile radius of the town centre :D

i had my fair share of bad days (people on the same grade bullied me because i was the only male staff member on the section of that grade- one of only 5 men on the section of 100 staff full stop) but people still come into my present job and remark that when i was at asda i was the happy smiley guy (despite the fact at the time i had depression :o which none of them know)

oh well, i move in 3 1/2 weeks
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)

Does the "challenge 25" rule apply to the lottery? I bought a ticket for my mum (who was waiting in the check out queue with weekly shopping - I'm much too cheap to gamble!) a few weeks back in Tescos and I got asked for ID (the 40ish guy in the queue behind me burst out laughing and asked if he would get asked as well). I'm 30.

Challenge 25/21 applies to all age restricted products. Even certificate 12 DVDs. Normally for things that don't have an age restriction of 18 the cashiers will use there common sense a bit more but officially the company wants Challenge 25/21 applied in all cases.

Tesco was caught twice by Trading Standards in Blackpool selling acohol to 15year olds, and then at one of there other stores they refused to sell a man of pension age and a walking frame with cigs because he had no ID double standards it would seem

and i of all people know that the staff handled it in a very unproffesional manner and where i worked they would have recieved what was referred to as '''counciling'' which was basically a warning which wasnt a verbal or written warning but was put on your file by a manager and lasted 12 months.

i think i may have upset you because i dared to complain about where you worked, i'm sorry but one of your colleagues was wrong and someone who is normally a happy and pleasant shopper (one of the rare minority as i am sure you are aware most people in supermarkets are miserable swines) was humiliated by a member of tesco staff with no people skills whatsoever
I've never worked for Tesco, I worked for M&S.

Like I said above, I've never worked at Tesco. But I know when I did work in a supermarket, I was constantly trying my best for the customers. I'd never have said anything like that to them. I had a lot of customers comment on how smiley I was and said it makes a nice change.~
I just can't believe someone is complaining about this when they should know how hard it is to work out how old people are.

If before hollywood is saying they've upset me because they dared to complain about where I worked, I think it is quite relevant actually. It clearly has nothing to do with that because I've never worked there, and they're not my colleagues!
